allow users to remove followers
how many steam users would like to have this changed?

this is a question that has been asked for before by people, so why can we not remove or at very least be able to see who is following us? at the moment we can see someone is following us, but not who it is that is following us. there should be an option to allow users to remove or see who these people are that follow us on steam. i find it very strange that it is set up the way it is now and some people find it quite creepy that it is like this, never knowing who they are. why would steam do it like this anyway?

For example I am following a user for his Stellaris mods and know when he updates them so I to can update my games but anything else he does I'm not told of, unless I'm directly friends with that user then it would be like following a developer at best

I see this

Your Workshop
2 Followers

But I never used that in my life o.o I mean, I subbed to items, just never created or made anything.
After hovering my mouse over my number (12 wtf lol) it said that number includes also followers on art and guides, and after looking at my only picture on my account ya I didnt notice art had a follow button, but I guess I'm more okay that they put those followers in the creators area then just normal followers...I think, idk actually because 12 is odd when I have only my one art piece thats..well on my profile and 2 mod packs that while are public; would of been smashed under miles of other existing mod packs people make daily...

It has zero effect on the person they follow, if your not friends then your only knowing if they recommend a game or update any mods that you are subbed and following.

For example I am following a user for his Stellaris mods and know when he updates them so I to can update my games but anything else he does I'm not told of, unless I'm directly friends with that user then it would be like following a developer at best
So the only reason to subscribe to someone is to be informed when they publish more game-related content, and there is zero effect on the person being subscribed to.

And people want to know who is subscribing to them, specifically so they can decide to refuse them? Am I understanding this right?
Gwarsbane 2023 年 5 月 12 日 下午 3:08
The person being "followed" is effected in that someone who might be stalking them to send bot attacks or other people to annoy/harass/downvote/whatever, are informed when the person they are following post game content.

At least if they had to go and check manually it would be a bit more of a deterrent to stalking them.

I would prefer to be able to control who follows me and when people can follow me. Personally I would turn it off even though it don't effect me much because I hardly ever put up screenshots or anything like that. But I should still have control over that feature.

Its like they put half of it in and just said, meh, its more hassle to finish it or remove it so lets just leave it half finished.

I am not overly concerned about this "feature", but I wouldn't be opposed to being able to opt-out of it either.
I find it a bit odd that I have 40 "followers" on this account, yet I have posted no Workshop content using it.
My modding account is my old original account, which only has 2 followers, though I did stop publishing Workshop mods using it 7 years ago or so. I am still chuckling and scratching my head a bit, wondering what the 40 accounts following me think they are going to see or find by doing so. They think this is Twitter or something, I guess?

I see nothing wrong with this. It would be nice as well if it worked with the block feature meaning that player's you've blocker or who have blocked you cannot follow you.
Crazy Tiger 2023 年 5 月 13 日 上午 10:29
Good suggestion. Though it would be even better if there was a toggle so that you simply cannot be followed.

This only applies to people who have workshop items though.
There is no other way to follow someone.

I have no workshop items and it shows I have 17 followers... So pretty sure this is just the general follow number.

following mainly only consolidates publicly posted ugc in the followers activity feed.

Alright. Weird, when I checked mine, it didn't display anything.
...
Some people (I assume) really don't like being followed.

... in real life or stal... followers online...
There's a big difference between the follow feature on ANY social media and someone physically following and harassing others in real life. A more comparable online scenario would be someone using alt accounts to bypass account blocking or doxing or harassing e-mails.

This hyper-vigilant drama needs to stop - it's destroying society.

Someone can just bookmark your content feeds without ever even registering, and autonomously check what you post while scraping anything remotely personal.

Stop making criminal accusations & stop attacking ordinary people who just want to use social media AS INTENDED, for the purposes of being social, and choosing publicly accessible media, while completely ignoring the shadow-actors that actually do seek to exploit you.

Seriously guys, you post stuff publicly, on sites that don't require registration to read, and yet you're only concerned with other registered members who use an official feature to subscribe to the content that you're posting?

I have 40 followers and zero workshop content. I follow a few people who do create ugc- Workshop mods or new games when I was into Tabletop Simulator. I would only see a thing in my activity feed if they published new ugc. It's not like following someone on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram. You don't get to see everything they do or post.
It's only for ugc they publish. You can follow someone who has zero ugc published, which is a tad weird, but it's how Valve set it up way back when, when I guess they thought that Workshop content was going to be the newest latest and greatest thing that would attract new users to the platform.
It is *not* like following someone on social media. Steam is *not* social media, even though it has some things in common with it. Just like YouTube is *not* Twitter, even though they have some things in common.

Shared or similar features and functions do not mean they are the same thing.

"Following" on Steam puts a notification in your activity feed if someone you follow creates a new Guide, Workshop content, or Collection. That's it.
Seriously, it tells you this on your followers/Workshop page:
https://prnt.sc/REw1zXT7oTPu

I am guessing that my 40 followers came from the single unfinished Guide I am a contributor on.

That is not a comprehensive definition. It also causes those items, to appear in their Activity feed page, along with any screenshots and artwork that they upload, and a few other things that they can publish publicly. Yes, it doesn't include EVERYTHING but it includes most things that you are publishing, publicly to the Steam Community.
Got proof of this?
Because oddly enough, the people (modders) I am following only show up in my activity feed when they publish a new mod or a new guide, because we are not on each other's friends list.
I do not see their screenshots or artwork, ever. None. Zip. Zero.
Only their newly published Workshop content and Guides.
Shella 2023 年 5 月 13 日 下午 7:13
It would be a better function if the Followers feature only turned on AFTER a user uploads content to the Steam Workshop. Otherwise, it would be automatically turned off.

This way, users can still be notified when a mod creator they like has a new upload. I see why the feature is there but it doesn't make sense to have it on EVERYONE'S account. Especially people who prefer their privacy or choose to not upload any content.
IFIYGD 2023 年 5 月 13 日 下午 7:27

That's how it has always functioned for me and screenshots even appears right there in the settings for friends, along with a section about workshop items and another section for followed users :
https://steamcommunity.com/my/blotteredit
>
    "When a user I follow:

    Creates an item?"

That section is separate from the settings about workshop items and functions the same as when friend information populates the activity feed for published content such as images. There's no notification for it, it just shows up in the Activity page.
If you don't see screenshots when you follow someone then it's probably because you have it turned off in your settings or none of their screenshots are new / recently posted.
Yeah, no.
https://prnt.sc/il9IU8KIRAbW

The setting is on. The modders i follow are posting screenshots and artwork all the time.
I only see Workshop items and Guides.
Check your friends list- are the people you are following on your friends list? If so- you are going to see their screenshots and artwork.

Here- to test it, I'll follow you.

I am not adding you to my friends list.

If you start posting screenshots and artwork and I start seeing it, I'll believe you are right in your assertions, and will happily admit it.
If not, I will still say you are incorrect.

Especially people who prefer their privacy or choose to not upload any content.

You do know that "privacy" on the Internet is not really a thing, right? If you post publicly on the Internet, anywhere- it is *public* and can be seen by others.
The same way you can have a totally Private account on Steam, and you post in public forums- your public post history is always visible to everyone (but your deleted posts are not- they are only visible to those with moderation tools that allow them to see post deletions and edits).
"Online Privacy", like the cake... is a lie. And it always has been.
