And people want to know who is subscribing to them, specifically so they can decide to refuse them? Am I understanding this right?
At least if they had to go and check manually it would be a bit more of a deterrent to stalking them.
I would prefer to be able to control who follows me and when people can follow me. Personally I would turn it off even though it don't effect me much because I hardly ever put up screenshots or anything like that. But I should still have control over that feature.
Its like they put half of it in and just said, meh, its more hassle to finish it or remove it so lets just leave it half finished.
I find it a bit odd that I have 40 "followers" on this account, yet I have posted no Workshop content using it.
My modding account is my old original account, which only has 2 followers, though I did stop publishing Workshop mods using it 7 years ago or so. I am still chuckling and scratching my head a bit, wondering what the 40 accounts following me think they are going to see or find by doing so. They think this is Twitter or something, I guess?
There is no other way to follow someone.
I have no workshop items and it shows I have 17 followers... So pretty sure this is just the general follow number.
Alright. Weird, when I checked mine, it didn't display anything.
This hyper-vigilant drama needs to stop - it's destroying society.
Someone can just bookmark your content feeds without ever even registering, and autonomously check what you post while scraping anything remotely personal.
Stop making criminal accusations & stop attacking ordinary people who just want to use social media AS INTENDED, for the purposes of being social, and choosing publicly accessible media, while completely ignoring the shadow-actors that actually do seek to exploit you.
Seriously guys, you post stuff publicly, on sites that don't require registration to read, and yet you're only concerned with other registered members who use an official feature to subscribe to the content that you're posting?
It's only for ugc they publish. You can follow someone who has zero ugc published, which is a tad weird, but it's how Valve set it up way back when, when I guess they thought that Workshop content was going to be the newest latest and greatest thing that would attract new users to the platform.
It is *not* like following someone on social media. Steam is *not* social media, even though it has some things in common with it. Just like YouTube is *not* Twitter, even though they have some things in common.
Shared or similar features and functions do not mean they are the same thing.
"Following" on Steam puts a notification in your activity feed if someone you follow creates a new Guide, Workshop content, or Collection. That's it.
Seriously, it tells you this on your followers/Workshop page:

I am guessing that my 40 followers came from the single unfinished Guide I am a contributor on.
Because oddly enough, the people (modders) I am following only show up in my activity feed when they publish a new mod or a new guide, because we are not on each other's friends list.
I do not see their screenshots or artwork, ever. None. Zip. Zero.
Only their newly published Workshop content and Guides.
This way, users can still be notified when a mod creator they like has a new upload. I see why the feature is there but it doesn't make sense to have it on EVERYONE'S account. Especially people who prefer their privacy or choose to not upload any content.

The setting is on. The modders i follow are posting screenshots and artwork all the time.
I only see Workshop items and Guides.
Check your friends list- are the people you are following on your friends list? If so- you are going to see their screenshots and artwork.
Here- to test it, I'll follow you.
I am not adding you to my friends list.
If you start posting screenshots and artwork and I start seeing it, I'll believe you are right in your assertions, and will happily admit it.
If not, I will still say you are incorrect.
You do know that "privacy" on the Internet is not really a thing, right? If you post publicly on the Internet, anywhere- it is *public* and can be seen by others.
The same way you can have a totally Private account on Steam, and you post in public forums- your public post history is always visible to everyone (but your deleted posts are not- they are only visible to those with moderation tools that allow them to see post deletions and edits).
"Online Privacy", like the cake... is a lie. And it always has been.
