So equivalently Valve just has platinum points, and no gold points. And thinking of ways to use your worthless points for something of worth is a nice fantasy, but that's all.
I would also argue Steam has better sales than the Nintendo eShop so I don't think I'd want to trade that away for Gold Points or equivalent. Nintendo's Gold points end up being like 1%-5% of what you spend, it varies and they expire after a year. You'd have to spend quite a lot to get enough to get a really significant discount on a AAA game. (Although I never save mine and just use them on the next purchase, same difference). I'd argue we don't really need them. But that's just me, a user of two different systems who thinks they're both fine.
But no, there's no argument you can make to manifest value for your existing Steam points.
But other people enjoy it. It's just not for you, and that's okay.
Well, for you. And it's fine if you choose not to make use of it. Personally, I've enjoyed giving and receiving awards, I've enjoyed buying emojis, avatar frames and profile backgrounds, and I've enjoyed adding and customizing showcases on my profile (yes, even though it's private). It turns out what gives features value is subjective.

Ever wonder that people keep asking for this feature because they want Steam to be more competitive? Or that they've accumulated a ton of points and the only thing they can use it on is on junk, or putting clowns on other users posts?
Then there's the reality that other platforms actually allow you to use points to partially or fully cover a game's cost. Perhaps these users want Valve to do the same so that they can keep buying games on Steam without feeling like a sucker?
But no. We have to make comments like that because the volunteer mods went around calling people beggars for years and this is the community they fostered.
I don't get paid in Nintendo Coins or Playstation Stars but I've used them to fully redeem multiple games.
Perhaps Steam likes the means to offer the same benefits the top dogs do, I dunno.
As with so many other things, they have no reason to think if the consumer as long as there is no "real" competition in the PC market.
This is another thing that will drive customers to other platforms, and by the time Valve gets around to doing something, it will be too late.
Despite their dominant position in the market, they're still being competitive. They just finished adding more features that, while not necessary, were appreciated quality of life additions (like being able to take notes in the client on a game-by-game basis). The fact that they're not offering a discount program linked to Steam points does not mean they "don't think of the consumer". The fact that such a program exists elsewhere does not mean we're entitled to it here.

I consider to start reporting these obvious gaslighting posts. I refuse to accept that people are that dumb and really don't grasp a concept that has been around for 20+ years even after it has been exlained to them in good faith multiple times already in each of these threads. So the conclusion is, it is trolling.
One last time:
YOU pay in points. Point that were created from someone spending money on Steam - which is the one and only way to create them. Steam then uses their profits from these purchases to pay the amount you use points for.
Too complicated to understand? I don't think so.
Thanks for mentioning it. Yes, indeed, this is yet another of these gaslighting obviously wrong and dumb statements that kept being repeated ad nauseum in this kind of threads.
This statement is even more devious, though, as it is exactly the same line of argumentation that excuses gambling in games - after all, the things you get don't have any value either.
