auto shutdown after download feature.
if you're like me, and have terrible internet, you might wanna leave a game to download overnight, but you might also not want to leave your computer on overnight if you don't have to,
so why doesn't valve add a feature where you can tell steam to shut down your computer after a download is complete?
i saw a post on reddit from NINE YEARS AGO about this feature,
not to mention a github program (which i'd rather not use) to do it.

thoughts?

my thoughts are this is not a place to ask for anything useful, be it a bug fix, a new feature or a change to the moderation policy. Valve doesn't seem to care about anything suggested, and lots of trolls are around. so if you don't want to use the program from github, write one yourself. you'll learn coding in the process and will be able to both check whether said program is malicious and make your own whatever you want it to be

Valve’s implemented suggestions from this section before. It’s how we got the nifty new block features recently.

I wouldn’t mind it. I believe someone asked for a form of this for Steam Deck downloads.

Don't know what are you talking about, the only thing I saw recently was a new login window.

It is a good suggestion.

Until (if) this is implemented you can:

-Make use of the windows shutdown timer command
shutdown -s -t
. You can look at the time remaining and add a 30 minute buffer for safety.

-Use an app such as Amp Winoff.

The network throughput often changes drastically, and so does the remaining download time. The real solution, not related to Steam client modifications, would be to monitor Steam's network and disk activity using Windows performance counters and shutdown the system after prolonged inactivity.

Thanks for 200 SP, btw, whoever you are, the person who gave me the clown award. If you give me more points, I can even write such a program for you.

you can do that in winkey+r

The OP doesn't want to use third party software. This one is harmless at first glance. Uses FileSystemWatcher to monitor the status of Steam libraries.

yeah, but this is my point exactly, i shouldn't have to do this, lol,
this should be a steam feature.

Have used that software myself in the past. Worked fine and had no nasty surprises in it.

But i do agree, for many years now, that such a feature integrated into the Steam client would be certainly VERY welcome.
And my thoughts on this becoming Steam's feature are up there, clown-awarded. Probably, if this program becomes donationware, the Chief User Ignoring Manager at Valve will get a "Money is paid not to us!" email notification, think "this is bad!" and contact their colleague from Useless Features to stop this outrage from happening. And soon the Steam client will be modified to prevent this third party soft from working. The feature it was implementing still won't be added, because of, say, secuuuurityyyy: shutting down your computer requires privilege elevation, which is bad, and it needs to be tested, and there are bugs, and despite the draconic EULA someone may try and sue them. No, no, no! No troublesome features for you.

Check out my Visual Basic script with a UI for automated shutdown after Steam downloads finish! It constantly monitors the download process and immediately shuts down your computer when the download is complete.
