You don't want to start gendering on the internet. You really. Really. Do. Not.
Pff, a reply from a "subject" with a fake profile.
Seriously what with the internet generating new a new gender every couple weeks its pretty much a minefield.
So your feelings are more important than another customer's who will be upset because *their* favorite pronoun isn't listed?
This way Steam treats everyone the same and is safe from the usual madness surrounding gender issues.
Are you so imaptient to show your ardent zeal that your fingers typing the lashing answer outfast your eyes reading my original post?
Why shall I even get into a discussion with a person, whose profile does not show any belonging to the Steam community?
People get upset when you do use it.
People get upset if their one that they prefer is not used.
People get upset if they have 500+ choices to choose from.
People get upset if they only have 2 choices to choose from.
If you want a special specific pronoun to be used with reference to yourself him/her/they/it/boffgobooly/whatever then specify it on your own profile and don't be upset when people don't bother reading it.
I try not to call someone him or her on the internet unless I know them personally (basically enough that I know they are man or woman or other), after all "on the internet no one knows you're a dog" as the old saying goes.
I slip up, more often then not, and have called someone a him when it was a her, or a her when it was a him and I have yet to see anyone take it personal. I've been called her a few times, I corrected the person (it was when I was using a different avatar on a different forums, it was female so they assumed I was), but I didn't get upset enough to hit the nuke button, in fact I didn't get upset at all, I understood that they have no way of knowing, so now, everywhere I go, I'm a Mecha if I have a choice in avatars.
I don't see any need for Valve to put in a custom pronoun thing, because then there is going to be like 150,000 different things that people want to go by and the database will have to keep track of all that, and thats just within the first week, I'm sure after a year or 2 it will be filled to the brim with everything you can think of, including racist/hateful crap.
Does it mean, that the reason has to be ceded to madness? Most of the platforms that involve social networking offer by default three options: F / M / Other (Not specified). Has Facebook or any other similar service fallen into the abyss due to the fact you can be either specific or non-specific on your gender over there? Nope.
Anyway, I am not deeply concerned by the presence or absence of this option, I realised I'd wished it be in place, so I made this discussion to see the community response. Two or three coments are not representative at all. Hopefully, there will be more.
(edited my post to add in a bit more you added because you edited your while I was typing mine up)
Because it could be for protection. Sadly idiots pounce on females that announce themselves, either to try to see if they can get a date or to try to harass them or what ever reasons.
If they choose male but sound female they will be attacked by some.
If they choose female, well I already explained why above.
If they choose other, people will attack them for not choosing one or the other/attack them for their choice.
If they choose a custom one, people will attack them for their choice.
If the option is there to pick one of those 3, or none at all, people will attack them for not choosing one of the 3.... and then if they do, they will attack them for the reasons above...
So Valves best choice is to go with what they have now.
As I said, if you want someone to call you by some pronoun that you prefer, put it in your profile in the text box at the very top. But don't get upset if people come after you for the choice you picked or if people don't bother using it.
1. There is plenty of hate & harassement without gender being specified, an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ will always find a reason to attack another one. That won't change anything on that matter.
2. I don't have any difficulties whilst communicatin with real persons whatever their behaviour is, I don't like the way the Steam platform refers to me on my page.
And as I explained, adding in the options will just cause more trouble then its worth. I explained, I think quite clearly what the issues are with he/she/other and people will scream for their choose to be included so add on top of that custom because if you give a space for male or female, you need to give a space to Flerken and Croltepets and donttrytotellmewhatmygenderisi'lldecidethat
And we won't see the end of "why do you have all these, I want mine included too" posts and Valve will spend the next 50 years trying to cover what everyone wants.
But you'll say "he/she/other covers everything." People don't want to be called other... well ok some do, but many won't and they will all want their own version of what ever they consider themselves up there.
Again its more trouble than its worth. So since it doesn't bother you just deal with it.
but at the same time i don't think this is going to be priority for valve, as this is probably the first time i have ever come across someone wanting this, but again someone has to be the first to want it and write about for others to see it.
I also personally think the current way is fine, as it seems like everyone is put into the same box and it also means less work for valve i guess and less consideration to be taken.
Genderless pronouns are an integral part of the language, just like other languages are exclusively gendered.
Problem Solved, and we wont have to see the silly "complaint" either.
Ignorant is the assumption of silliness of one's suggestion based on mere disagreement with the said opinion on the matter being discussed.
Don't provoke a linguistic holywar here as the "genderless" 3rd person singular pronouns that are authentically recognised by the majority of English language speaking communities are: 'it' & to some extent 'one'.
Besides, I do always wander how you, double-standard doublethinking hatemongers that get "upset" each time your "rights" & "interests" get "violated", "hurt" or whatever, but that bash any other one expressing any degree of intent to defend another point of view, how you still remain that much influential on the Web?
And you don't tell me what langue should I use.
I launched this discussion with an intent to get short & argumented answers "pro" or "against", without any desire to get into emotional discussions over the matter.
Those who spit their anger, whilst claiming that
any changes to the status quo would provoke an outburst of hate, should first check up the integrity of their cognitive order.
Thanks to those who have contributed with meaningful responses so far.
