This isn't Myspace nor is it 2002. Let's not.

The licensing and broadcast infringements that this would involve would be staggering. The offensive stuff that people would slip onto their profiles with innocuous named files would be horrible.

There's a reason we do not have this.
Sure, if you wanna pay for a commercial license.
Only music possible would be royalty free
oh yea i forgot it 😶
Or better idea, use the search function and see why this will never happen and that many people hate the idea of music on webpages.
No
First problem: abuse, it already happens in game which features voice comm: play ear-rape music.
Second problem: data usage, not every users have high bandwidth. Some even have timely quota.
Third problem: different music taste. Whats the user likes is not necessarily the same as what the visitor likes. This is quite similar with why playing music loudly in public space is impolite.
Fourth problem: copyright and royalty issue.

Using the search would have helped you before you made this thread.

No thanks, having music on profiles and sites is horrible even back in the day. Plus with all the copyright and DMCAs being thrown around lately for people that play that type of stuff on streams and stuff it's a horrible time to even think about this type of feature. Plus it would be a huge waste of money for Valve or even the user to pay to play copyright music.

+1, I fully support this idea.
Seems to be time that the current generation is reminded of why it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obnoxious and why webbrowsers have an option to not only identify but also mute tabs without actually visiting them.

Speaking about offensive stuff. The report button is there to counter that exact scenario.
I'd be more concerned about copyright, HOWEVER, i am sure that it would be possible for Valve to obtain a limited use License for profile soundtracks only and have a premium feature based around that to cover the costs of licensing AND net a profit to Valve. If people want to customize their profiles perfectly, they have to pay.
I'd personally be down to pay for that sort of a premium feature along with some minor improvements such as personalized .gif based profile pictures (like discord has with Nitro), maybe more availibile profile themes (the 8 or so we got right now isnt enough for all or most colour schemes possible)

All in all, having music on your profile should not be considered outdated, as it can be fitting to a certain theme a person is following on their profile.

Sorry for typos/grammar. Wrote this at 5 am after a sleepless night

First problem: Report button. Takes less than an hour to have an offensive profile banned.
Second problem: Relevant. Bandwidth and connection IS an issue still, but loading an extra 300kb of mp3 file fragment wouldnt make anyone's router fry
Third problem: Music taste is up to the person creating and customizing the profile. If you dont like the music, there should be a mute button within quick reach. If you are getting earraped or something else, just report the profile and watch it have its priveleges revoked within an hour probably.
Fourth problem: relevant BUT solvable IF the idea proves to be profitable. Licenses can be issued and limited use contracts are a thing.
Problem 4.1: censorship. Some countries don't allow certain authors/music and that is way harder to deal with.

Look at it this way:

Twitch is owned by the richest man in the freaking universe.

He does not allow twitch streamers to simply play games and not get hit with DMCA or muted VODS while playing those same actually purchased games on their streams. He could throw money at companies, and does not. Even if he did, I strongly suspect they would turn him down in favor of the ever-present looming threat of copyright slams literally everywhere online. The people in charge of most music are simply idiots.

I don't disagree that game soundtracks should be 'available' for such a thing, but Valve / Steam would not stand a remote chance in HELL that any owners of music anywhere would allow this.

That and... just... did you live through the 90s and early 00s? :) I did.

Music on profiles is the devil.
