Invite Friend to Current Game

There used to be an option a long time ago to invite a friend to the current server/game you're playing. Now all you can do is invite to watch. Will this feature of invitation to play be coming? If not, it needs to be!
Edit: Per comments, it is based on games. The game I am looking for the invite option to return is Counter-Strike 1.6.

Depends on the game, but the games I host and have privacy set to invite friends only has that very option.
When its set to public anyone can join.

Yeah it does depend on the game. I have a friend who continually invites me to CSGO though I don't have it.

Thank you for that info. I don't understand why it would only work for some games - especially when there are public servers.

I've absolutely no idea why either.

If I had to guess, I'd go for it being a feature of Steamworks that's there for devs and publishers to use, and some either don't want to use it or can't be arsed with it.
