To check out how many active online players a game has atm you can use the SteamCharts:
CS GO:
http://steamcharts.com/app/730
TF2:
http://steamcharts.com/app/440
etc. etc. etc.
Try godus, idle civilizations or soul loctus. lots of warnings in those forums for the state of the game.
How come I have to wade through 3rd party sites or a site valve doesn't even mention on the front page of Steam or maybe somewhere near the a game's store page?
I'm asking for a direct and upfront overview of a product I might wish to buy by using a method that is benificial to the steam platform and its users. I don't see that right now on the steam store page.
PS:I appreciate the efforts but Steam still could use this improvement.
Well if i wanted to see the state of the game I'd just go to the reviews
Most (all?) of that data is incorportated into the store page if you view Steam via your browser with the Enhanced Steam add-on.

playerbase is meaningless though for instance with singleplayer games
its also meaningless with games where there are third party methods such as gameranger to get the online part working
For most games it's not hard to find some online community of die hards.
At least if there where no huge death jump i missed
The death count will never change and no new content is being added.
It might resurect some day but there's limited interest in that.
Sad too, i wanted to see how the whole thing played ouyt. Basically the problem was the maps were repetitive and worse the death counter was set far too high.
Well they don't have to. As I said "in any way" it could be automated since they have the information on their databases or ask the players of a given game and ask them something along the lines of "is this game's community active?"
