sign into steam with no internet

The other day my internet wasn't working due to some power outage in the area. I was thinking "ok i can play me some single player games."
So i go to sign into steam and it will not allow me to do it cause I have no internet....honestly I thought it was pathetic...I payed for all these games and I can't play them whenever my internet is down, that's really not fair...
Why can we not sign into steam with no internet connection?? This should very well be available...

If you have them installed and they are single-player, just go to the Steam folder and find the .exe of the game and you can play it.

you did pay for those games, but steam works like drm similar to origin or uplay, you need it to run your games, otherwise buy a retail version

Signing into off-line mode requires an active internet connection. It's a preparatory step when you know you're going to be offline, it isn't any good during an malfunction.

These days, the easiest way to get around it is to tether/hotspot your smartphone to your PC, sign Steam into offline mode to minimize bandwidth usage, and then play your single player games.

So offline mode does not work for one or more games ? normally it should, sometimes they do ask you to run it online first cause it might need to do some things usually it works at least with 89% or more of the games.

If the game saves all progress online ( cloud or whatever) then you cannot run game in offline or even if online and signed in an internet connection fails then you cannot play the game.

I bought Rescue Team 7 i own 1,2,3,4,5,6 and they can all run offline mode : problem is RT7 does not.... so i now have my first game that does not run offline mode , he uses steam api to save online so the users will be able to play from any machine or device and progress is saved online
smart and noble but what if:

1) your own ISP fails
2) steam fails and errors, server problems or connection...
Basically you then have a game or more games you paid for but cannot play 24/7 because it save online. These versions should not become to common cause then i will stop buying games if i cant play ofline mode.

does NOT work with rescue team 7 at least in my case i tried everything: the game requires you to be logged in steam and be LIVE , yes the steam client needs to be in online mode and make sure internet works cause otherwise no play....
Its sad cause i told them i realy love their games and have 32 on cd/dvd retail drm free and dozens online here but ... thats the way it is: people need to play the game on any machine and this way they wont have to start the game allover when playing from other devices.

Anyway i really think they should inform in the description of the game that the game will need to save online and thus cannot be played in steam offline mode and your internet must be working 24/7 or no play of the paid game. This way people can decide to skip that game.

even to get to offline mode, you must be able to sign into your steam account and then go offline mode. To be able to sign in you must be connected to the internet...but I understand now like Washell said that would make it too easy to make pirated copies of games..

Maybe.
Anyway i assume you read all the articles on the internet that because all developers/publishers are so scared of piracy they forget one important thing:


Any form of DRM will always and only hurt the honest buyer.... countless topics in as many countless posts can be found all over the big internet telling that.

Those people that are to greedy to even pay 10 cents will always do bad things and illegal things. but in the meantime we the honest buyers are seen as potential 'thieves' 'pirates' and god knows what else they suspect us off..............


They should be thankfull that we the honest customer exist, but no.... the big guys see a criminal in everyone to them its: guilty until proven innocent

Anyway .... i cant play that game if it cant connect so if they keep releasing all new games with that option then its no more games buying for me, i will wait and sometimes drm free retail games come around they might be 3 or 4 euros more but i gladly pay that to get rid of that nagging drm and all that triple checking of games before the client finally starts my game.

Start Steam > Put some random letter into "Password" area > Steam gives you info there is no internet > Click "Go to offline mode" > Congratulations you are in Offline mode without using or having internet :)

I disagree. I have never been hurt by any for of DRM, nor have had any issues with them.

A retail copy will not remove that. If the game requires Steam, then it still requires it.

Steam is not DRM. Steamworks can be used as DRM, if the developer chooses to use it as such.

Such restrictions are up to the developer of the game, not Valve.

Actually, that's not true. The reason offline mode might not work during a malfunction is if you don't properly close the Steam client before shutting down your computer. If it's still running when you turn your system off, it forces a shutdown of the program, which, apparently, causes issues with offline mode.

And I know offline mode works without an internet connection because I tend to get malfunctions from time to time. Heck, I've even signed into offline mode with my laptop when there's no power.

I would add that he should make sure he has his Steam settings configured correctly; i.e. have "Remember my password" box on the login window checked and "Don't save account credentials on this computer" in the settings unchecked.
