Family Library Sharing need to relax their rules
I am disappointed to learn that I cannot share one of my games with my roommate while I wanted to play a different game. For example, my roommate wanted to play Shadow of War from my library while I wanted to play Factorio. As soon as I click play on Factorio. My roommate had to log off from Shadow of War within five minutes.

In the old times, we share our games in CD or in a device and in that sense my roommate could still play Shadow of War CD on her computer while I play Factorio CD on my computer. See what I mean... I wonder if we need to sign petition or something to ask for them to review the policy. I am grateful to see Steam have many good policies like refunding the game within 2 hours of play and/or within 2 weeks from purchase. *Not sure the exact rule, but you get the idea. I would love to see Steam have a strong set of policies that make us, the game players, have a positive experience with their purchases on games.

Purchase the game your roommate wants to play on their own account. Family share is not meant as a way of piracy, only one person can play a game in the library at the time just like how it typically is with regular Steam games where they will say (app is already running) when trying to launch more than once.

Buy your games.

In the old days you could play your CONSOLE games that way.

You could not play PC games on multiples, due to actual limitations on licenses. Unless of course you were *illegally* sharing them. Which you were, if you did that.

You could also just play Factorio in offline mode. It would be cool if Family Share allowed more than one user per library if they were on the same local network, but sadly people would abuse this with vpn's or tunneling software.

Do any other PC launchers support any form of Family Share? Also the activation requirements on old PC games wasn't always as easy as, I can just take this disc and use it on this other PC no problem, unlike consoles. Activation limits could often be a headache in the past depending on the copy protection.

I agree @Zekiran with what you said.
Buy your games.
The devs need to make a living too.

The difference is if you want to share physical games you have to physically give the game to someone.

With digital games with 1 click your friend has access to 1000+ steam games in your library. If you could share every game why would friends ever buy their own copies of SP games? They'd just create 1 account, buy the games and then share it.

Mutliply that by millions of people and you have a massive issue.

well the family share is a great concept but then steam ran into the ground and killed it.

you can only share the library with someone when you arent playing. not even that specific game but any game. the only way they can play games in my steam is (in theory) if im not on steam. which is just plain backwards.

same game being shared (aka we use one game to play with each other as if we had two) i understand restricting it. but that my daughter cant play terraria unless im off steam? might as well buy it for her. which defeats the entire purpose of the family sharing.

When was it different? What PC (or any digital) platform does what you are asking for?

this is basically unchanged since family sharing was introduced.
the intended use case is the first thing they explain.

was a very quick google search. NEXT time YOU do the search...
Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store may be one of the most welcoming when it comes to sharing games with your friends and family. Similar to Steam, it allows you to share with up to five users on up to ten different devices. However, unlike Steam you can play on multiple PCs simultaneously.

GOG
you are allowed to install your games on as many computers as you want within your household. Therefore, sharing with your family members is fine as long as they are living with you.

You said Steam ran it into the ground and killed it, I think that heavily implies they made changes that ruined it.

I'm trying to do my research on XboxOne family sharing, but so far everything I see says you can only share on one other console. Not saying this is correct, but so far I can't find the actual info, still looking.

no. thats an assumption on your behalf.
it is a great idea conceptually but in the implementing of the idea they killed it.
share your games = great.
share your games but have a list of restrictions making it highly unlikely the games are ever shared = running the idea into the ground and killing it.

it didnt come out great and then get ruined later. it came out from day one badly flawed.

2 applies to your posts

read again. think before you post.

family sharing is managed so badly that it fails at what it wants to do.
family sharing idea/plan is a fail.
