It would reduce the quality of conversation even more on these discussions. Which isn't needed.
Forums and the community is open to be seen by anyone. Even non-Steam users.
Besides, I've had no issues in expressing myself in multiples languages without having to face the Steam wordfilter or swearing for the last three decades. I left behind my need to swear like a drunken sailor after puberty.
You're not meant to swear in some places, Valve decided the community is one of them.
And is perfectly possible to discuss adult games without having to disable the wordfilter. English is a rich enough language to do so.
Tools are also suited to a situation. You don't bring a sledge hammer to a watch repair course.
As such the steam community forums are a place where profanity isn't needed (or rather not wanted, since it's filtered) . So respect the situation and move on.
If you can't articulate a point without profanity your not using the tools you have properly.
Much the same goes for the statement that you're not meant to swear here. The filter being optional does not imply the rules need changing. Many (indeed most) things that are against the rules are not filtered out. That's okay, that's normal. We get by just fine. The rules can stay as they are.
Exactly. Swear words are not meant to argue a point with logic and reason, we have normal words for that. Swears are meant to express emotion, as i said, and normal words cannot match their power. You wouldn't bring a sledgehammer to repair something, but if used carefully it would work to pound in nails. Likewise, you wouldent use a rock to pound in nails, but it would work with some finesse. You could engineer normal words to express emotion, but a swear word would work better. Likewise, you wouldn't swear in an academic paper, as that is not the place to express intense emotion. I'm not swearing while typing this because I am trying to prove a point using logic. In real life, I swear all the time, to express intense emotion.
1. butt-covering for legal reasons.
2. so that people who don't like seeing certain types of games can have a more pleasant store browsing experience.
The wordfilter exists for two entirely different purposes:
1. to encourage people to be civil, by messing with people's usage of foul language because foul language is often used to express strong opinions in ways that don't encourage discussion but instead incite arguments.
2. to filter out the names of certain disreputable websites.
Which is an issue on your side for not being able to self filter your own words. I swear more than any pirate ever would around the right people, but beyond that I can easily go without having to use profanity to "express emotion". People fail to remember this is a public forum, if in real life you are in a public place, are having a rather audible conversion with someone and are just spitting out profane after profane, you are simply being rude and is unwanted. Those same inconsiderate people are the ones who seem to have a problem with word filters on a forum and that is because they can't resist the urge to use profanity, while others can.
Civility is cultivated socialy. In real life, there is no word filter, and yet you dont hear people swearing loudly in the street non-stop. And, if someone is, they get thrown out or arrested. Same thing on the fourms. If you are having a civil discussion and someone comes in saying "UR FAGAT" or something, just report him. Or just leave the filter on. Or both. The choice to disable the profanity filter would not create a climate of hostility, it would be a minor change at best. Filtering of spam and pornography sites would still be perminantly enabled, as that's actualy a good idea.
This goes with what I was saying before. If your profanity is disrupting, you get thrown out, as with getting banned from the fourms for the same reason. As for the other thing, choosing not to use profanity is like being celebate. Its a commendable choice, respectable even, but it isn't for everyone. Saying I swear all the time was hyperbole. I don't actualy run around screaming swears everywhere. I too only swear around friends and family, as do all sane people. Swearing at strangers is reserved for making a point, and is used sparingly by people who understand their power. People who abuse this power get thrown out or banned.
The filter is just basically an automated glaring-angrily-at-you-if-you-swear.
FYI you can still easily read the original text by quoting the post that's got stuff filtered out. It's not meant to be foolproof. It's just meant to be a noticeable nudge.
