Spotify Now-Playing in Steam Profiles

I propose that a feature for Spotify account linking should be implemented, allowing the current song/most recent play to be shown in our Steam profiles - similar to the approach seen in Discord. It would also allow for song sharing, which could work well with the new chat system.

Could be difficult to obtain the proper licensing, considering the interconnected nature of Steam.
Alternative suggestion, add a new profile block allowing you to upload an MP3 of limited length or file size to display on your profile like the badge collector or custom info blocks.

Uploading of mp3s will never happen just because of copyright issues. Not to mention if its auto play many people will HATE it because when you are listening to your own music and go to someones profile and suddenly their music which you hate is playing on top of yours, very annoying.

There is something else, many do not want bloat, if you add spotify you are going to have to add all the other music streaming services out there and just to get spotify would be expensive, now imagine what it would be like for Valve trying to get 30+ other streaming services built in.

If Valve were really worried about copyright, they wouldn't make it possible to upload art either, which follows the same principles.

I'd imagine it's going to happen sooner or later, but that's yet to be seen. First they need to make it work with local music files.

Right now they only have status displays for games, sourcemods, software and first party streams, afaik.

playstation music is spotifys only game platform partner, exclusive i assume because for everything else the platform either just provides an app or webaccess and no deeper integration.

for PC you dont need this, spotify has an app for PC and web access.

was unlikely to happen when there was code in Steam that prepared for a possible integration 4 years ago. even more unlikely to happen now since the deal was done with sony.

Tell that to the RIAA which tries to go after individuals uploading songs for 150,000 (for each song), has won in court many times and bankrupted families and has been trying to get youtube off the safe harbour list since its been around because so many people upload copyrighted material

They want to go after youtube (and other websites) for billions and billions of dollars each for what their users have uploaded.

Just fighting them in court would cost Valve a lot of money even if they would win, its all money they would never get back because there is no way they could charge for something like this as no one would pay to upload music for others to hear.

Valve would also have all these peoples information and could easily pass it off to the RIAA which would then sue the individuals and bankrupt them. No matter what way you look at it, Valve would be losing lots of money and would be getting a very bad rep driving people off to other sites because they would be passing the info off to the RIAA. All youtube can do is give them an IP address as most people don't use their real info on youtube unless they are uploading videos to get money from them. Many people on Steam need to give Valve detailed info due to taxes.


Valve would also have to hire FAR more people to look into what people are uploading and find ways to stop people from uploading copyrighted material. Youtube has lots of people and they still can't do it. And if certain laws go into effect in the EU, it could pretty much shut down every single company like youtube that allows users to upload stuff (including artwork) if they don't put in a 100% effective filter that stops copyrighted stuff from being upload in the first place, which is just not possible as people will find a way around it. (and yes this law will actually effect Steam also even as they are now, it could mean no one is allowed to upload any thing to Steam anymore including images.)



Its far more complicated then any of us all realize, in the end it will just cost Valve a lot of money and headaches and bring in zero money.
