Start Steam Client Service Manually
I feel like this long-existing "bug" should be addressed, I don't like crap starting up with my computer, which might not be used that session and needlessly bogs down my PC. So the first thing I disabled was the Steam Client Service. However, whenever I start Steam, I get the message telling me to install it, to which I just hit escape and carry on. Is Valve going to just forever rely on this quick fix? Or is this service, if even necessary, going to start up with the main client, just like another other properly-coded program?
EDIT: I set it to manual, but it keeps disabling itself, I'm on Windows 10.

Bug doesn't affect me (win7 64bit), what OS are you using? I checked my services and the steam client service isn't currently running and it's set to manual (which I probably set at some point).

Ps, why not set it to manual?

Edited my post; I did, it just keeps disabling itself.

I'm on Win 10 and this never happened to me.

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled Steam?
No problem for me either, why not go to Steam, Settings, interface tab, take the tick out of the run steam when my computer starts box
Steam -> Settings -> Interface -> [ ] Run Steam when my computer starts.
Disable this option.

There is no bug. Don't mess with the services unless you know what you are doing.
The Steam Client Service should stay on manual; it is required I believe to handle game installations (as the UAC prompt during first time install suggests).

Steam starts and stops the service as necessary, turning off "Run Steam when my computer starts" prevents it from starting.

I'm referring to the service, not the client, essentially, I do a standard task manager and msconfig startup kill, which other programs don't have a problem with.

I do understand that, but the Steam Client service should be running when the Steam Client is running, and it should stop when the Steam Client exits. It is a vital component of Steam, and should be set to manual start in the Services list.
I don't like services running that I don't need either. The steam client service seems to serve no purpose but to mine data. I have disabled mine to no ill effect so far. Odd that it isn't needed in Linux and doesn't need root privileges except in Windows. Is it because Linux users care about their privacy ?

Your weird tinfoil decision to think that is on you, bud.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. :steamlaughcry:
I'd suggest, just because you use linux doesn't mean you think you know how their system works.

Never said I did. Odd that the service is not required to actually use steam, though. Don't you think ?
For the record. I use both Windows and Linux. Linux for serious work and Windows to play as Linux is not great in that area even if it beats Windows in all others. Try it if only for a giggle. You might find you like it for productivity.
