Please support paid mods.
The reason I post this is because I myself am pursuing a degree in digital media. I'm coming up to my last semester after this summer. And I'm very concerned about whether or not I'm going to be able to find relevant work. My major has me specializing in animation but I have learned a wide range of software knowledge especially with almost all Adobe programs and also Maya. To me, paid mods was a shining hope of being able to find work where I can put my skills to use. It was an opportunity to build a reputable portfolio with ratings to prove one's success in the market. It is very disheartening to see steam buckle under the pressure of a community that is majorly ignorant of the amount of time it takes to learn such skills and in some cases the amount of time and effort it takes to apply them. Not to mention the cost of going to school.

Now, I'm not aware of the complications software engineers have in regards to making mods for games. I only understand that updates made by developers could create issues with said mods. Therefore, I cannot argue on their behalf. I just don't understand why a community would be so hateful towards the sale of a person's hard work.

And coming from a professional point of view. If Steam wants to take cuts from the revenue, or any developer for that matter, I say why not? You are definitely not arguing on my behalf when you make this point. One of the most important aspects of being successful in my profession is gaining an audience. Steam provides a HUGE player base. Developers provide a canvas.

I would argue, as my professors would, that getting a foot in the door for someone with my major is as difficult as an actor or scriptwriter getting their's in the movie industry. This is the desperation. I just want to let the community know the actual harm stopping paid mods have done.

You are not required to buy a product. And we definitely aren't asking for a lot. So who here is actually being greedy? Hmm? Thank you Steam community for destroying something that could have given work to thousands. I'm glad you were all able to save a couple dollars.

The frame work for paid mods still exists within Steam. you just have to talk to Vlave and the developers of the game you're modding.

Oh I see. Should I assume that a game without a workshop instead has a market for mods in-game? Like CS:Source for example?

I haven't gone into CSS to know if there is or not. I'm just asking because I don't want to reinstall or buy a game just to find out if there is.

the system is not only just there, it is also in use by several games and was in use before it got a poopstorm media coverage with skyrim.

the "paid mod" debacle with skyrim was the same as the existing system, just with no curating and easily accessible for purchase which caused the general uproar because greedy idiots wanted money for a few pixels and the peasants did not want to ignore that and pulled their pitchforks.

the system perfectly was and still is perfectly in use, just never without curation by the developer.

example:
Speedrunners Accepted Trails created by anyone
and the web-accessible store for them

csgo the same just that the stuff is just accessible on other ways and never directly.

and also the hard reality that this will not turn into a living:
25% of the money goes to the item creator and in case of this game:
Items posted in this Workshop 31,797
Items accepted for SpeedRunners 23 (0,07%)
tems posted in this Workshop 259,065
Items accepted for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 531 (0,2%)

You can make a living , but the thing is. That really. You have to be damned good to do so which is the point of it. As for the poopstorm. Well after much thinking I did realize that there is one group that would have been unilaterally negatively affected by the whole paid mods thing.

Can you guess whom?

That is what I am arguing for. Why is the community so against having the sale of mods without curation? There will still be free mods. A mod would have to be of sufficient quality for it to sell. I don't understand the uproar nor the argument behind it.

I want to say kids and young adults living with their parents? No I cannot say I can.

Edit: And the suspense is killing me. Also I'm sure that anything that ends up having adverse effects on the games themselves would only push to improve the system.

They aren't hurt in fact the competition will improve the products offered and ergo benefit them. No No no. The real losers are sites line Nexus Mods, and ModDb . Yeah. These sites actually make money off mods. Some charge premium fees, some have advert banners , and others have both.

What do you think happens to them and their revenue?
