why doesnt steam have a gender option in the profile ?
i dont really see why theres no option to pick your gender , thats a feature that would be fast to make and wouldnt harm anyone , if someone doesnt want to tell others they can just not select anything

I think probably this stuff:

is the strongest "against" argument - like if everything's fine at the moment, and the feature doesn't actually allow anyone to do anything they can't already, then maybe inviting a bunch of transphobic jokes isn't a great tradeoff.

It may not be so called "sensitive information" like a real name, city you live in or whatever, but many people mostly women don't like to have their sex displayed for anyone to see since most guys act like dogs online towards them and I've seen way too much of that garbage and I'm a guy and I'm tierd of it.

If people want to tell you then they can write it on their profiles like I've seen people do.

well . some people like myself have written it in the infobox or the upper box below the name , so why not make it an optional feature on steam , you can ignore it but if you want you can have it in a special place instead of burried in an info box

It already is optional in the profile and you yourself said how.... you write it in the upper text box. There is no need for this "option" anywhere else. Its a lot of extra coding (time and money) for something that is pointless and actually potentially dangerous. As was pointed out idiots target women on the internet and most women would not put info that they are women.

So thats nice that you want to put that info out about yourself, but one day it could easily bite you in the butt. Most of the women I know have been harassed more then once when someone finds out they are female, its disgusting what some people will do just because they are beat by a female.

I am not joking.
I must watch that movie again soon sometime. :)

But this also proves that people will want a whole lot of stuff added in. So putting all the info you want to give out into the text box is the best option instead of making Valve waste their time and money.

Because it's a gaming platform not a datingsite, gamers don't need to be a certain gender.
If you need to tell people what gender you are, use the infobox on your profile.

but the real name and exact locations matters for gaming ?

For finding a friend that has it displayed but has a stupidly generic username, yes it can matter.

Same for location.

You don't have to give that info, but yes, location is more important than gender, name is of no importance imo.

You only ask for gender if you absolutely positively no-way-around-ly NEED it. And thelast thing Steam needs is another way for "edgy" arseholes to offend someone by using this dedicated field.

.... Because they don't need to add that level of information. I mean, they literally just clamped down on info privacy for profiles, why add something that can't even be seen by default any more?

because why not , steam accounts can be levelled up , you get showcases , but you cant even select your gender or make an avatar (unless you make a character in a game and upload that as a screenshot)

with all those new bad changes i see no point in further leveling the account
Photoshop, gimp, any modeling program? You can upload custom pictures. Valve isn't going to make an avatar creater when there's so many programs you could use to do it, it's pretty pointless for them to reinvent the wheel.

If you want to know someone's gender, go on facebook.

Gender isn't important while playing games, so theres no need for. If you really want to show off to people about your gender, you can state you have a weewee or vaggie. Or attackhelicopter/trans-alien if thats your thing

Steam is a gaming platform... I just don't see it fit in, unless steam wants to be like facebook.

Yeah because it would be "hi im a sexy girl, I love cs go and please gift me this and that" while 99,999999999999% of them would be a guy - better said some kid who just wants ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and knives.
We are here all gamers, doesn't matters which gender who is.
MrL0G1C Apr 12, 2018 @ 11:10am
Because group A would want their gender be kept private, Group B would only want to show their gender to friends, group C would want their gender to only be shown to some friends, Group D wouldn't want to enter gender at all, and group E would only want to show their gender to friends if their playing CSGO on a friday but not on monday and not on leap years.

Yes. Do you know any people with the name Peter and from Minnesota that has the username Dirty Dan? If I had just Peter, or just Minnesota, there’d be a way higher chance of someone confusing me with someone else. Gender basically does nothing when it comes to narrowing down who is who.

How is gender identity in anyway a transgender issue? If you’re transgender than you say that you’re the gender you feel like you should be...and Apache Helicopter is more of a make fun of the whole “anything passed T”...because to be honest Pan and several other things shouldn’t even exist as “genders”.
dynastystar Apr 12, 2018 @ 1:17pm
What purpose would there be in it...? I think the majority people don't care about your gender. The ones that do will care for malicious reasons.

And this is exaclty the reason why it won't be added. Gender is a hot potato. If you leave out an option, people will be offended. If offer exhaustive options, people will get offended. If you add joke options, people will get offended.

That's why gender neutral terms are the way to go today. Even on addresses it's about to get lost. (Not to mention that some people suffer constant false pronouns and salutation thanks to their names.)
