Custom Friend Code
It would be nice if we could set our Friend Code to any number that's currently not in use.

I find it rather strange that Valve uses only 8 numbers in the code, that gives them just 100,000,000 aka 100 million unique combinations. There are more accounts than that, or do they delete a leading zero?

9 numbers, not 8.
And yes that's weird. If there are only 100 million combinations, does that mean that not every profile has friend code?

In my case it's definitely 8 numbers, if it's 9 for you, then my guess of hidden leading zeros may be on the money.

My code is 160001122.
That's 9 numbers. Then that means that there are 1.000.000.000 combinations (and maybe more if there are profiles with more than 9 numbers)

Maybe it would be good if profiles didn't had Friend Code until user generates one.
If someone don't want to use Friend Code, they don't need to have it and Valve won't have to keep codes for every single profile that exists.

And if you want to use Friend Code, you could create custom code that's not in use, or generate random code.

My friend code is the same as my steamID3. I can't imagine that's a coincidence.

Oh yes, you're right.

Friend codes are steamID3 numbers.

That's why Cathulhu's code is 8 numbers

It being the Steam3 ID kinda kills the suggestion outright but at least more people can figure out that it's not just some randomly assigned number.

Which would also explain why i have only 8 digits. My account is older and from a time where 8 digits where enough.

surprised that people are confused about this

it is your steamid. that version of the id in particular is the running userid, means, you are user number XYZ that registered on Steam.

they should provide the alphanum hased version in addition, that allows it to be a bit shorter.
10 digits for new people seems kinda too long and i personally and culturally dont like numbers to be used for this

before you are looking for a solution ... already there.

/p <- to profile
/nmnjrjd <- userid
/blablanotreal <- invite code

You think yours is old? Mine is only 6 digits.

And there are single digit accounts that will come up.

All you have to do is look at Rich to see that single digit #1... if he ever still uses it.

I checked my friend code neighbors and one of them is actually still an active account. The other shows their profile hasn't been setup, so probably an abandoned account.

Older the account, the smaller the number.
