A Birthday System
Steam should add an option to put your birthday on your profile, friends only. Also send a notification when it is someones birthday (only your friends).

i do not believe this will be added sorry... atleast not the notify friends only

I think the notifications would get annoying but I like the idea of having an option to be able to put your bday on your profile like, it could go right next to where you live?:bbtcat:

Notifications could also be optional. It would show up in your activity feed. Maybe like a Birthdays Today column on the right.

Or, like, right under.
Use the free text if you have to publically display your birthday.

Why not? More options are always nice. And if you can turn it off, then it's perfect. People who want that feature can have it, and people who don't can just turn it off. It already works for facebook anyways... I know Steam isn't facebook, but I guess some people just want that extra bit of interaction with people... anyways, the main reason this feature would be exciting (in my opinion) is that if you're over 18, then you won't have to go through that extra window to confirm your age when you want to check out an M rated game. I know kids will exploit this, but they can already do the exact same thing, except it takes a few more clicks for no good reason. You could just save your birth date once, and not see that window pop up ever again if you want to check out an M rated game.

Just take this out of context and this is wonderful

I think it can be nice, even that i do not see Valve dose it so much, and not sure how many users will want it, how ever it was asked before
You can how ever for now at least, make a group for your self, and invite all the friends you want them to know, then set events for it on the group, that will notifie the users abut it, and will show in the activity area

I do not think that will stop the age gate, as that show more as a cover for Valve to say they asked on that active session what the user age was (also in case a kid of the owner is on the PC)

The chances of having friends have a birth day 2 days in a row is 1/133,225. Unless you only have friends who have birthdays in May, in that case it's 1/961. Not a good point to make.

STEAM could actually grant one a small discount on the birthday, if there was a way to verify the data about the day of birth, to avoid exploitation of this through changing the info on demand.

Too easy to exploit. Anyone can setup multiple accounts. Suppose they use a passport to verify the date of birth. I could make an account and use my friend's passport. Or family. This is very unlikely to happen. Also what games would they discount? Ones on their wishlist or all of them?

Devs would decide? Also how do you get your hands on someone else's passport? "Hey Dad, could I borrow your passport to receive a small discount on steam?" "I don't know can you?"
"Hey friend, you know how desperate I am for discounts? I was wondering if I could borrow your passport, you know, for one discount once a year." "Yah, no sorry."

So people can lie about their birthday the way they lie about their real name and lie about where they live? No thanks. Useless feature.

This is why facebook was invented. Go check your friends there.

I think the bigger issue to ask, is who is going to take a look at that passport? after all doing it by software is not likely to work well for example:
http://blog.atlasrfidstore.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/biometric-passport.png (Its crossed out, but you get the point)

Its going to take one hell a lot of people to do it, and after all that you give them a discount? dose not seem like a very smart business move
