What is a badge used for?

I know there's probably an answer to this question, but I can't find it. What EXACTLY is a badge used for, and why do people find them important?

Crafting badges gives you EXP, which increases your steam level. With each steam level, you get +5 spots on your friends list, and every 10 levels, you get an increased chance to get booster packs and unlock more profile showcases.

Other than increasing your level, though, badges just look shiny and make people feel good about having them. I guess you could compare getting badges to e-masturbation.

But achievements at least have some value to yourself. You completed a challenge the game set you. These badges are only about how much money you spend.

The cards, badges and Steam level are all meaningless in my eyes... I’m still yet to see how they benefit my enjoyment or me personally in real life. I am still yet to see what benefit they have, if any at all?

Also, they are not achievements, we already have achievements.

Note that certain badges now affect the games - for example having the badges for Beat Hazard unlocks extra skins for your spaceship (don't think this has any gameplay effect still).

But in general badges are pretty pointless.

I love them. It has offered something extra to do along side Gaming & you do actually gain more customisation on your profile as you craft them :)

Some employers give raises based on badges. (That's what somebody told me.)
