For example, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 runs on Games for Windows Live, however Dawn of War 2 Retribution runs on Steam Play. Some games are hosted by steam, but their online services are hosted by another provider such as GFWL or Valve.

Unseen Oni is a tad wrong, here. I think he's thinking of Steamworks!

SteamPlay means on a single purchase you get both the Windows version and the Mac version of the game tied to your account.

yes i mean steamplay.
so otherwise you have to purchase it twice for windows and mac?

The majority of the games on Steam only support the Windows platform. In these cases, only the Windows icon will be shown. That looks like THIS.

Some games on Steam support both Windows and Mac AND a single purchase nets you both versions for your account, meaning you can play your game regardless of whether you're on a Windows computer or a Mac computer. These are called Steamplay and the Steamplay icon will be shown. That looks like THIS.

Finally, there are a very small number of games where both Windows and Mac are supported but you have to buy each separately. To my knowledge, only Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 does this. In these cases, the Mac icon will be shown. That looks like THIS.

Hope this clears up any confusion. Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

If a game had both versions and no Steamplay, yes, you'd have to buy it twice.
So far, I believe only CoD Blackops is the only one who has separate games for PC&Mac on the Store

Edit: Ninja'd

I thought that it included linux too. Bought event[0] thinking I was going to be able to play it and it told me I had an invalid platform. Steamplay does NOT mean all os/platform. It means Windows and Mac.

It doesn't mean Windows and Mac, it means you get it for all available platforms. If a game isn't available for Linux, it's still Steamplay because you get both the Windows and Mac versions. There are other games that do include all 3 and those are Steamplay too.

Also this thread is from 2012, Steam wasn't available for Linux at all until 2013.

If I remember correctly, the SteamPlay logo was dropped after Valve started using their own SteamOS logo to show that a game worked on Linux instead of using the more traditional penguin logo. Some people got confused between the two and Valve clarified things by dropping the SteamPlay logo.

Well does that mean every game have steamplay now???

No. CoD Black Ops still has the separate Mac version.
But, if a game shows more than one OS supported, you get it for all those platforms shown.
