Why doesn't Steam install the desktop icon properly?
Hi all. I've installed two games recently (Jedi Fallen Order and Guild Wars 2) where the desktop icon is just a plain, unassociated white "paper" icon, and double-clicking it brings up the "How do you open this?" dialog box.

Why is it doing this? Thanks!

You need to re-associate all of Steam’s shortcuts with your browser. To do this, you need to go to your desktop’s control panel, then select Programs, then Default Programs, then Set Associations. Find the .url extension and change its default program to your preferred browser. This may fix the issue of Steam shortcuts not working properly.

Otherwise, when you try to open it on your desktop you should be able to search for and select "Internet Browser", or otherwise use your primary internet browser for the task.

Well, I have Chrome set as the default browser already. Is what you're suggesting something different?

Why would the browser affect this anyway? Isn't the shortcut just a link to the exe of the game file?

No, it's not a shortcut link to the exe of the file, it's a .url link which needs to be opened by a web browser, so set the program when the pop-up comes to be the "Internet Browser" it should be its own option.

nope, always "Internet Browser" for .url extension
any specific browser will lead to issues with Steam and any other other program that uses browser protocols for their shortcuts.

Thanks everyone! Simply choosing "Internet Browser" when clicking the unassociated file seems to have fixed it!

What if “Internet Browser” does not appear in the list of programs?
