The 360 controller is plug and play. Plug it in and start a game. It should work fine. Not every game is compatible, but a lot are.

What Muckymucks says - of all controllers, the 360 one is the most widely supported.

If you don't have access to a wired 360 one, you can equalliy use an old Xbox conrtoller too as they're USB (just with a proprietary connector on the end) - a simple bit of cable rewiring and you're good to go!

If you don't have that option, then the PS3 pad is easy to use too. Plug it in, with the USB cable, download "MotioninJoy" run it and follow their instructions. It will emulate the 360 controller happily.

When you have Steam started, push the silver button in de middle on your controller (can't miss) and you are in Big picture mode. It's designed for tv-screen setup.

If it's a wireless controller and he doesn't have a cable, his PC isn't likely to be able to detect it (unless he has a suitable reciever, which I think he might have mentioned).

Zyncster do you possibly have such a thing - cable or receiver - or do you have a PS3 joypad or original Xbox controller?

have you tried looking here http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-on-other-devices/windows/xbox-controller-for-windows-setup

You can't access that data unless you have a Xbox login.

OP, I take it you're confused because you have a wireless controller and you don't know how to connect it to a PC, yes?

In that case, you either need a suitable cable from MS, or a wireless receiver from MS (that plugs into your PC).

If you don't want to do this, then that's why I asked if you have a PS3 controller, as that can be used straight away without any additional purchases, or an original Xbox controller which you can easily convert (as it's natively USB - you just need to change the plug).

if you have done these correctly and still have trouble try this
Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows

On Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows, you can use Device Manager to help troubleshoot problems with your controller. You can use Device Manager to see whether the correct items are listed and to make sure that there are no conflicts.

Note A conflict is marked by a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager.

To use Device Manager, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
When the controller is successfully installed, you see three entries in Device Manager. There should be two entries under Human Interface Devices:
HID-compliant game controller
USB Human Interface Device
Additionally, there should be a third entry in under Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class:
Xbox 360 Controller for Windows
If you see yellow exclamation points next to any of these entries, there is a problem with the installation. If there is a problem for either of the entries under Human Interface Devices, first verify that the problem is caused by the controller by unplugging the controller. If a hardware conflict with the controller was causing the problem, the yellow exclamation point will no longer appear after the controller is unplugged.
To resolve controller problems in Device Manager, try these solutions one at a time (move to the next solution only if the solution you’re trying fails to resolve your problem):

Use the built-in troubleshooter:
In Device Manager, double-click Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.
Click Troubleshoot, and then follow the steps provided.
Remove and then redetect the controller:
Right-click Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, and then click Uninstall.
In the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
Try updating the driver:
Double-click XBOX 360 Controller for Windows.
On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
