Can I restrict the cache size?
Hi everyone,

So I did a clean install on my laptop the other day and whilst backing up my files I noticed that the amount of cache files Steam has stored on my laptop is insane! One game had over 90,000 cache files stored. In total there was over 80gb of cache files for the half a dozen or so games that I play on Steam.

Does anyone know if there is a way to limit the amount of cache files that Steam can store?

If it carries on like this then I'm going to need a bigger SSD!

Thanks,

Emma

In general no, but you can ask in the respective game discussion hubs to get a more precise answer.

If these games are large, they're large. Nothing to do except uninstall some games.

After the clean install I have only installed a couple of Batman games and Tomb Raider so I'll keep an eye on them and clear the cache every now and then.

I saw that there are programs available that keep the Steam cache files tidy. Anyone ever tried any of these programs?

If you mean tools like CCleaner, they cause more problems than they fix.

Game cache or web browser cache?

The steam appcache is only around 200mb, you must be getting it mixed up with actual game installs.

Frankly, Steam calles game installations caches.

Thinking about it now it was probably a game cache stored in the Steam folder. I haven't played any games since my clean install so I'll have a little play tonight and see where they appear.

The program I was talking about was Steam Cleaner.

Anyone ever used it?

Ow boy.
Clans also often use this and then defrag before matches to get the completive edge
This is a fine example of buzztalk. Actually, this is complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Take my tip: don't use programs advertized with buzztalk.

@cathulhu stop saying ccleaner is bad... ms use it themself...
but yes it require skill to use it... or use default value if you dont know what you are doing...

just say to them make system point backup first ...then you can try see if it help them...
but i do agree witth you, many click on option and have no clue what they are....
but thats another issue.

It's entirely possible.

Well the plan is to buy a 1tb SSD then put my 500gb from here in to my desktop PC. I was just hoping there was a way to restrict the size of the cache files so I don't have space wasted unnecessarily.

1tb ssd? how about you buy a high end computer instead of overly expensive storage.
