Half-Life

Is Half Life Fun/Worth Getting?
I haven't ever played Half Life and I know it is supposed to be the pinnacle of gaming or whatever, but I was wanting to know if the first and second games are worth playing and whether or not the DLCs are worth getting either.

The first game is epic, but In my opinion, not as epic as the second (Most importantly HL2 Episode 2) although, you should most definitely get this game, but if the look is "too" old, or the gameplay is a bit boring, I recommend the $20 remake on steam called "Black Mesa" (Or you can get the free mod version that was released back in 2012 to show what they had so far,)

But yes, Half-life is worth it, But again, like I said, if you want to try the FREE version of the remake, you can get it here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa/downloads, you can look up videos on how to install, Its a GREAT remake

If you want the full version of the remake, just look up "Black Mesa" on the steam page

Half-Life is a very important game in the history of FPS games.
Just don't get HL Source, get the original, and yes both expansions are great, even though Opposing Force is a little bit better than Blue Shift, and on top of that, you have plenty of mods to play.
Wait till they are on sale so you can get then cheap.

Half-life 2 and its episodes are also great games, episode one being a bit short though.

I am in your shoes as well friend, but I bought Half-Life and this is my first time playing it. All I can say is that it's a great and fun game to play. Yes, it may look old because it was released in '98 (I believe) but it is, nonetheless addicting as well as a lot of thinking to do when playing throughout the game. After Half-Life, I know I'm getting the expansion packs and the sequel as well.

Yeah, I have never played Half-Life before, but I wanted to give it a try since hearing all the fuss about Half-Life 3 being confirmed and not. But yes, I will most likely get the expansions and sequel (:

I don't doubt that, even though I'm just playing Half-Life! I will probably message you saying that you were right... Anywho, I have a question...Do you know if I can you a controller to play Half-Life, or must I stick with W, A, S, D and trackpad?

Ok, I looked more into it, and the game doesnt really have controller support, but people recommend using programs like Xpadder to set up your controller with the game, this is the forum I read that on - http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/577441-half-life-1-with-360-controller/

Sorry for the late reply man, but I visited Xpadder but it only supports Windows. I think it's alright though, because others were saying that Half-life was meant to be played with mouse and keyboard rather than a controller. It's just that I am used to playing on a console, not a PC.

Its fine, I guess this gives you the chance to try out what the PC gaming peripherals are like,

Oh HL1 multi-player can be a barrel of fun. I host a team-deathmatch server for it, currently running with Teletubbies models .. uh oh!

HL1 and HL2 are both great games. They are a bit less linear than current day FPS's you may be used to, with just as big a focus on exploration and finding your way as the combat. They also have great atmospheres that pull you in. As another user said, HL1 is a bit dated visually (though I personally have no issue with this) and if this is turn off for you, you can get the Black Mesa remake. Just be warned that it does not include the final leg of the original half-life game, and I am unsure if they plan to add it in at some point. Even so, it is basically 95% of the original game, so it is still worth a purchase if you'd rather go for that.

The DLCs for both games are definitely worth it, too, ESPECIALLY the HL2 DLCs. They add a lot to the story, and are every bit as fun as the core game (and unlike the HL1 DLCs, which put you in the role of other characters and take place parallel to the events of the main game, the HL2 DLCs are a direct continuation of the story, and are therefore much more critical. So if you must pick one to get DLC for first, definitely get HL2: EP1 and HL2: EP2. It is better to see HL2 and the 2 Episodes all together as one full title.)
