How to rename games in Steam library
Sorry for my english... It`s not so good as i want...

I`m realy bored by horrible publishers games naming politic. And about a two years ago somewhere i found the way how to rename games in Steam library. And here it is:

! All changes is client side and local (other people will see normal names in popups for example). It`s just for personal comfort.

1. Exit from Steam
2. Open %PathToSteam%\appcache\appinfo.vdf ("C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\appinfo.vdf" for example) with any advanced text editor ("AkelPad" for example)
3. Search by game name place where it going after "common name" and change it
4. Save the file
5. Launch Steam and get pleasure from the normal names

I`m used that way about year. It`s safe (in any time you can delete this file and vanila version will be redownloaded on next Steam launch). But it has some inconvenience - sometimes when releasing new updates or sometimes without obvious reasons) games got their original names back and i must rename that games again. After the year i got tired of this and ordered automatization tool for this operations to my good friend programmer Guevara-Chan. Now it`s done and i want to share it to people like me:

Version 0.50

Here You can download this tool with clean list of replacements:

https://yadi .sk/d/PRvDl7NIuCEqP (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

Here is my list of replacements for Russian locale (special symbols may vary in other locales):

https://yadi .sk/i/preS4chPuCEqH (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

And here is the sourcecode (writen on PureBasic) for those who thinks it may contain "cuban spyware that talks with brazillian servers" ;p:

https://yadi .sk/d/D-yLUhZ3uCEqT (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

Compraison before and after.[storage2.static.itmages.ru]

How to use:
1. Unarchive tool to any folder
2. Open the Ruleset.ini with any text editor
3. Fill it with changes you want to do (like in example in file)
4. Exit from Steam
5. Run SteamRoller.exe
6. Wait a few seconds while work will be done and Steam will be automatically launched
7. Get pleasure from the normal names

I recomend to always use SteamRoller.exe instead Steam exe to avoid problem with games which geting their original names back on updates release.

If You want to say thanks - You can send something what you don`t need to me or Guevara-Chan.

Meet new version:

Version 0.55

Here You can download this tool with clean list of replacements:

https://yadi .sk/d/HvT-2x_TuCEqj (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

Here is my list of replacements for Russian locale (special symbols may vary in other locales):

https://yadi .sk/i/OpuZQ1z9uCEqe (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

And here is the sourcecode (writen on PureBasic) for those who thinks it may contain "cuban spyware that talks with brazillian servers" ;p:

https://yadi .sk/d/6H2ZCf_RuCEqo (just delete the space between yadi and .sk)

New features:

+ Posibility to change or delete "SortAs" field if it exist. To do so, You need to add string in "[*SortAs]" section of "Ruleset.ini" with "OldSortAs = NewSortAs" for change or "OldSortAs = `DEL" for delete.

there is no reason to use that program. you should never use closed source software that is free and is directly target to modify the behavior of another software.

I recommend using this:

open source, can autocat your library and is not infested with cuban spyware that talks with brazillian servers.

SteamRoller.exe

Or Valve could just let us edit the names ourselves, it would only ever be viewed locally so what's the big deal.

I don't think it's so much that Valve cares what the game is named in your library, as they don't assume there to be enough demand for it to be implemented as a feature. That's purely my speculation though.

Here is no Cuban, Brasilian or any other spyware. I think what my friend don't needs to cheat me. I don' t know wat is the ByteHero and CMC, but big antiviruses like Kaspersky, NOD, Avira, Avast, Dr.Web, etc thinks wat it's clean. By the way i have sources and don't publish them only becouse want to ask autor about. Now i have permision and will publish sources some later today, when i'm get home.

Thank You for attention.

Added the sources in first post...

So this is temporary? I don't really want to use another program to play my Steam games (Steam roller). I can't believe there isn't an official way to do this.
Throutle Oct 25, 2015 @ 11:25pm
This program works not instead Steam client, this program works before Steam client then launch it...

For my sadness there is no official way to rename games in library regardless many discussions on forum.

Thank you, both of you.

Can I request a feature? Can we add SortAs info?

Explanation:
Some games, in appinfo.vdf, have "SortAs". e.g. Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY has "SortAs Batman Arkham 2" and Batman Arkham City GOTY has "SortAs" Batman Arkham 4".
Is there any way we can add this for games that don't have it already? (or edit it fir games that do have it)

I'd love to, for example, have the Half-Life series show up as follows:
Half-Life SortAs Halflife 10
Half-Life: Opposing Forces SortAs Halflife 11
Half-Life: Blue Shift SortAs Halflife 12
Half-Life Source SortAs Halflife 13
Half-Life: Black Mesa SortAs Halflife 14
Half-Life 2 SortAs Halflife 20
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast SortAs Halflife 21
Half-Life 2: Episode 1 SortAs Halflife 22
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 SortAs Halflife 23

Oh. I think what i am only one who use this utility.
I will talk about Your request with Guevara-Chan.
dingbat Dec 13, 2015 @ 5:02am
It's an awesome utility. Not the most user-friendly (and it would need considerably more work for that), but it does the job perfectly
OMG just found this thread, i thought i was the only one who is bothered with the game names and DLC names. Why is the developer so careless and lazy when naming their game? especially the DLCs name as they are not inconsistent at all.
