Is there anyway to chat in-game without opening overlay?
I was wondering if anybody knew a way to make it so you can send messages to friends without opening the overlay i.e. like opening chat in minecraft or other games with a similar function.

I find it a hassle to cover my game and hit a button combo to respond to/see a message i recieve while im playing a game.

P.S. sorry if this isnt in the right sub, first time posting here.

I don't think you can do it, but I might be wrong. One suggestion would be to edit the shortcut for the overlay to a more easily accesible button.

you either have to alt+tab out of the game, or use the overlay. otherwise 2nd monitor.

minecraft and other games have chats for a reason and yet they do not allow to talk to people on other servers, especially not to talk to people who play other games

parts of the message you see in the notification that steam pops up for you and that should mostly be enough to decide if it is worthy to respond and to respond via text message you have to interrupt your gameplay anyway, in any game, even minecraft.

The thing about the overlay is that its not dedicated to chat; there is a bunch of other stuff that pops up along with it. I was wondering if there was something to make it so I can easily respond to a message without going to another window.

Also, i'm aware of how minecraft and steams chat/pop up functions work and what I am and am not able to accomplish with them. I wanted to know if somebody had a way to alter it/ improve it for my own interests.

They made a crosshair program for monitor so you can have a crosshair playing games that dont have crosshair.
Why the hell they dont do the same for CHAT?
I'm deaf, i need chats ingame.

Idk why you necro this, but using 3rd party software, or using montior own built in software for crosshair is their own thing that has nothing to do with Steam.

For chat, either you use your smart phone, or tablet to view you messages using Steam chat app, get a 2nd monitor where Steam chat can appear on, otherwise alt+tab see the message, or open overlay.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
