Steam will not download games faster than 200 MB/s

I currently pay for 5 gig internet, however, my steam downloads seem to peak at 200MB/s.

I have a 7950x3d, a pcie 5.0 motherboard, and 5.0 m.2 SSD. I can see using task manager while downloading games that both the CPU and SSD are not the bottleneck.

I have seen online people hitting 300MB/s - 600 MB/s on steam with slower processors and SSDs, so I know faster speeds are possible. Does anyone know what may be the bottleneck here?

Many people seem to not get how Steam works as it works a little differently than most other places.

For a start, a very common mistake is people don't realise that the speed listed on the downloads page by default is in MEGABYTES per second, and not the usual megabits people use. So you need to multiply that number by 8.

Next Steam downloads are both encrypted and compressed. This means that you'll see a download work for a period, then appear to stop while the hard drive chunters away. This is normal and expected.

It's downlading a chunk, to a temporary place, unpalcking and sorting it before writing that chunk to where it should be. For this reason it isn't just your internet speed that's relevant - it's your RAM, CPU, I/O, hard drive and more.

So you can check if anything's awry by opening the Task Manager while downloading and seeing if any of those system resources are being hit hard. If they are, there's your bottleneck.

Lastly, space. Valve recommend you don't go over about 90% of your space on your drive(s) due to the needing to unpack and sort. You should always allow up to THREE TIMES the total file size for this action too, so if it says a game file is 1GB, allow 3.

And if you do go over that 90% it WILL slow down as your PC desperately fights to try and find space to poke that game data to sort.

Well I just hit 480 MB/s on origin, which is significantly faster then anything I have seen on steam. It is still not the full 5 gigs but close enough. I would assume this has to be a steam issue.

I did and yes I understand how steam downloads its games, as well as how your specs would impact the download speeds.

My specs are not the bottleneck imo as people with worse specs then mine have maxed out their 10 gig connections on steam. The 7950x3d isn't even showing 50% usage while hitting 200 MB/s, and I have 64 gigs of 6400 MT/s of ram, and a crusial T705.

The drive has over 1tb free as of right now, so the only thing I can think of is it is just a steam server issue.

Look you can have worlds biggest line, still dont mean you have the line from your ISP into steam.

This means you have traffic into own ISP, not rest of the world.

I did not say you dont have it, its matter of your ISP and there partners partner can deliver it. ( most cant ) require you actual have a ISP that know line or should i said connection into steam is inclueded along the way as flatrate, ( aka have the bandwide for you all the times , as fare as i know most do not have a dedicate line ) and can be very costly.

I will say almost 99,9% das privat use can't afford such capacity bandwidth in fiber,
and what are the odds you have a ISP that nextdoor neighbour to a Steam datacenter, very slim.

any issue with DL is your ISP that need to explan this to you. ( you paid for it, so a little service most be there )
Thats not same as you pc cant handle inc data. ( huge diffrence in ther detail here.)

And you are sure you don't mixup 5g local lan with wan lines, ( hey we can only ask here. )
we have no clue or intel what you have, so easy to make this mistake, if you don't know the diffrence.

And be happy we ask stupid question here. to maybe get double confirmation of it.

Part of the problem here its 5gbit wan line's is not 5G on lan side ( as fare as i know no ISP in the world use Wifi at wan side, and never will , more a emergency fix maybe if needed until they can fix its with right hardware., i bet.
