I was hoping for something that only requires one finger to move, like a controller does, while simultaneously letting me have the freedom of many keys that a controller does not have. Also I don't like being limited to the 4 directions. With a stick you can move at any interval and with WASD you are stuck with 90 and 45 degree angles only. I dont need this as much as I do something that lets me move with only one finger, but I still prefer a analog stick to WASD 7 ways till sunday.
As a disabled user, I own a few weird and wonderful controllers and input devices, and have used more as well. There MAY be something there for you but I rather doubt it, because apart from some of the really outlandish kit, it still boils down to keyboard or joysticks.
That said, I'd be surprised if you can't configure Mass Effect or Dragon Age to play on joypad simply because I have them on various consoles, and they obviously work fine there. You'll find a lot of games can be used with joypad even if they aren't designed to be.
Of course, the most supported ones are the 360 controller and the PS1/2/3 joypads (as they can be emulated to be 360 controllers with utilities such as MotionInJoy - I use this), so it might be better to go with those for ease of support.
I can't give you specific guidance on keypads as I've not used one in an age, and I have no idea how supported they are.
My current keyboard has this, I use a corsair k70. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE keyboards and the freedom you get from playing with them, but WASD is just so damn limiting in comparison to a stick. I think im just gunna go with a orbwalker. My desktop is pretty diverse now, corsair keyboard, logitech mouse and a razer keypad. I need a keypad anyway because I suck at learning new key placements every time I pick up a new game, plus from what i've tested they are uber comfortable.
Would something like this work? You can program the keys and make the direction pad basically become the WASD.
I use the arrow keys for most games I play, i've been using them for years. More space for your fingers and less likely to press the wrong key.
I still use the WSAD keys for certain games like Dota 2.
Like someone said more you use them the better you will get. Also you can config your own keys to ones that feel right to you.
I recommend you remove Motionjoy drivers[emulation-general.wikia.com], and install SCP Driver Package.[emulation-general.wikia.com]
Motionjoy is bloatware with junk that creates online connections whenever you use the driver. You also have to be online to use it. It's really not recommended and it's not clear what kind of things the creator does when you're using it.
For keyboard/mouse emulation to controller, use Xpadder. It's a bit difficult to get things right at configuring for first time, but you can switch between multiple profiles to make things easier.
I just bought a keypad, hopefully it will work for movement as well as solve a couple other issues i'm having.
Yea, i'm sure if I gave it a week or two I could get used to it, but I'd rather not get used to it because I find it clunky. The keypads seem to be the best option I've found so far, atleast they'll let me move with only one finger.
Can you guys describe this thing for me? I wouldnt have to use it motion wise, would I? I would just use the analog stick on it to move and program some buttons am I getting it right?
Its not 100% movement. With WASD you are limited to 90 and 45 degree angles. You can move foward or backward in different degrees but at the cost of moving your camera angle with your mouse, which isnt a great trade-off since you need to be looking in the correct direction at all times in most games. I dont find it easier, it takes 2-3 fingers to move with WASD leaving only 2 to do other actions. Also most key binds are close to WASD which means you often may have to use a finger that you use to move to preform another action, limiting yourself even more if you arent completely and totally experienced and comfortable with WASD.
