Steam download few seconds then stop
Hi there, i have a problem with steam when it's downloading a game or just updating one that's installed.

The download will start normally when i open Steam then a few seconds later it will stop. On the download tab there will be a note besides the game (Scheduled for h:mm AM/PM) at that time the game will download again for a few seconds then stop, there will be a new "scheduled for xxx) message, it will go on like this till the game is fully updated or fully downloaded.

No matter how many time i restart Steam, no matter if i click on the "download now" button it will just keep doing that... It's to a point where updating a 500Mb update can take an hour to download, since steam will download 50mb then rest for 5mins... (I'm downloading a 13GB game right now, i'll let you guess how long this would take with this issue...)

It started since summer sale i believe, when steam as the brilliant idea (sic!) to put a clicker game on its front page. Since most people were experiencing problem at that time i didn't really bother, but now....

Also one thing, the steam icon on my task bar, when it's downloading this way it's yellow instead of the standart green.

I hope you can understand my problem, feel free to ask some questions if you need more details.

Have a good day/night.

Yellow means you have a game already downloaded, but it's paused. It turns green when there are no paused downloads. I believe the problem here is your internet, though. I once had real crappy internet and I had to do a factory reset on my computer because it was nearly broken so when I downloaded games, they'd pause and get rescheduled.

is the message displayed "busy writing to disk"?

My internet isn't the best, but it's 10M, I used to download games between 700kbs to 1M/s. But since you said it might be my internet I checked my download settings on the Steam library to verify my download region. It was set to Beijing (1400Kms away), so I changed it to Shanghai (230kms away) and restarted Steam... It started downloading normally at 1024kbps, i had hopes, but it just stopped again :(

Where is this supposed to be displayed? I don't have it, it seems.

That is normally displayed below the dl speed in the download tab, but that doesn't actually pause the download, it is still downloading, but the download speed goes down to 0 until it stops writing to disk

This is an ongoing problem for nearly 5 years or so. Based on the first thread that was created about it. This isn't a new occurance. Ive had this problem for about a year now. I have done virtually everything there is to try and remedy the problem. It seems to affect people on windows 7. Cuz there was one fix which required some prompts but it worked for Win 8 users. I added steam to exception list on my anti virus software, I have limited my speed to 10 MB/S. Kind of stupid to do since I can download games from other clients as much as 21 MB/S (Origin/Battlenet). But I limited it. It still stops. I changed regions, uninstalled and reinstalled, upgraded my hdd from 5400 rpm one to new 7200 rpm hdds. You name it, I did it.

It's been very frustrating as I have asked for help from anyone in the steam community but to no avail. Seems like it doesn't bother anyone else so they don't offer any kind of tips or help (with the exception of a few). The only way I can download the games is to hit the arrow to download now, forcing the game to d/l. But who wants to baby the queue? It's annoying.

I found how to fix it, It only happened when I was scanning for viruses and it always stopped the download. So I stopped the scan and bam, It went back to normal

I moved to a new place and suscribed to 100M internet. The problem still comes out sometimes but it's not as bad as before since when it's downloading instead of a speed of 750kbps it's downloading at a speed of 8~9Mbps....
Someday i'll have this problem, someday it will just download flawlessly

Yellow does not mean a game is already downloaded. If the game was already downloaded, it would not be in queue. However, what you also mentioned is right, in that the download is paused. When it's green, it's downloading with no hiccups regardless of speed (from 250kbps ~ 10Mbps). Highest I was ever able to achieve is 12.2Mbps.

I can safely say I no longer have this problem. After upgrading to Windows 10, updated my LAN drivers, and modifying some parts of my antivirus software, the downloads rarely pauses (or turn yellow) for me now. It is possible that the scanning part of the av or the firewall is the issue. Hope you are able to see improvements soon.

Yeah, I meant to say the yellow indicates the download is paused, dunno why I said it was already downloaded

After ceveral test, i got The downloads to work properly after uninstalling my KIS 2015. I hace Windows 10 with a core i7 and AMD hd7950. Hope that help anyone
