Is stealing a steam account punishable by legal means?
One of my friends almost had his account hijacked recently, and steam gave him the hijacker's IP address. Would it be possible to get him/her in legal trouble, knowing the location?

I'm afraid there are no paralegals out there who would take your case seriously.

If the hijacker is in a country where it is illegal and you can find a government agencythere willing to investigate and prosecute they can get into legal trouble, but they'll likely decine or just file a useless report if all you have is an i.p. address.

He used some kind of IP tracker to figure out the guy was in Florida. Think that'll work?

do you have around $15k money to throw away for the >possibility< that you can get a civil court case against the "hacker"?
if he was dumb enough to use his own end of line connection for the login

I seriously doubt it unless your friend also resides in Florida . There's not a ton of coordination/cooperation between state agencies and many will pass the Buck to the feds as they typically have the jurisdiction and powers for crimes across state lines or done over telecoms infrastructure (internet, phone, etc).

They would likely have to subpoena Steam to confirm the I.p's and even then I doubt that would be enough for a warrant to seize computers at the address of the I.p. and if it is a dynamic ip or one with a ton of users like a school it business forget about it
