So, when can I change my Steam Skin with Valves blessing?
Seriously,

When will this be a full feature of the service? Been promised for years, hasnt it? :Bucco:

Upper left corner, Steam, Setting, Interface. The third drop down box is for changing skins.

There are several popular skins available (all are user made) if you do a search. Metro and Pixelvision are two that come to mind.

The skins option has been there as far back as I can remember using Steam.

Because I cant download direct from the service, im not gonna risk a third-party download. Give it its own section with skins Valve say are safe, please :csgohelmet:

are you one of those people who thinks every site is a virus
Valve is too lazy to want to support skinning officially, especially when its frequent updates may keep breaking features, so they're probably not going to do that anytime soon.

FYI when you download a Steam skin, it should contain a bunch of folders, with names "friends", "graphics", "public", "resource", "servers", "steam", and these folders should contain mostly .tga and .res files, and maybe a few other filetypes.

It should NOT be an executable. If it is, you may have downloaded something wrong.

You can download metro and PixelVision from DeviantArt - a wellknown and respected site.
If you are paranoid you can check the files with virustotal.

But how is the average Joe gonna figure that out? With all the stuff going on at Valve these days, trying to appeal to a larger audience, offering a few alternate skins direct from them is like the bare minimum id expect.
I agree choice of skins should be a feature. There was a thread about it last week. But as you
can see the community is trying to help out. :steamhappy:

I also have to agree with this. With everything Valve says and does to help prevent third-party abuse of Steam users, it would seem almost counter-intuitive to even include a skin option if you're not also offering skin options within the service itself. I wouldn't say it's a pet peeve, but the option itself doesn't make a whole lot of sense without data to support it. At the very least, they could get ONE guy/gal to dev skins for Valve games, and maybe a couple of color options or three.

Do they have a suggestion box or, is THIS it? :D
You seem to be a little disappointed. But yes THIS is it. Please consider that these people
put a lot of work and dedication in it without getting any monetary compensation.
As for suggestions I'm using PixelVision myself. There is one caveat though. It is no longer under active development.

I am not, actually, looking for skins. Personally, the default look works for me, and I see no reason to change it. I was just affirming that it seems pointless to include a skin change option when there is only one native option.

I think you are misreading my inflection here. Im annoyed at Valve for not having the best created skins hosted on the Steam platform. As the user above said, "it seems pointless to include a skin change option when there is only one native option."

I can understand your annoyance. Although for users like me who are not satisfied with the
vanilla Steam skin this option is a good thing. May I also point you at the different community
groups which are trying to alleviate this deplorable lack of choice:
