Random deletion
I am wondering if anyone else had this problem.
To begin with no I did not aid in this happening and yes I live alone.
Ok now on to my question, has anyone other than me had Windows randomly delete all games and assosiated folders from the computer? This is not the first times this random deletion has happened to me and yes it happened on Win 10 and now it is begining on Win 11.
Like I said all files are gone and the used disk space has returned meaning the some 350 Gigs used has now randomly returned. Ive gone as far as to look inmto my computers Reg and no traces of the game exsist however the launchers remain BUT the launcher has to be reinstalled.
Anyone had this problem or any clue as to ahy Windows is deleteing these folders?

Hi. I am also facing the same problem. it occurred three of my games. the game files disappear after a couple of weeks. I am on windows 10. 1709 64x bit.

i installed witcher 3 and a week later game did not launch. when i checked the game folder only 30GB left. there should be 50GB. 20GB wiped out without a trace.

and in sleeping dogs definitive edition, the game worked perfectly for two weeks, after that when i clicked play it showed error. an error occurred while updating the game ( missing executable )
when i checked game folder there were only 4GB left. however it began to download 12GB and said updating. there are no updates for the game and it is very old one.

in alan wake, after a couple of weeks game files are completely gone from the folder and showed the same error message when I clicked play. began to download entire 10GB of data saying it is an update.

i do not know how can such a data wipe happen....

I still have shortcuts on desktop of the games even the files are gone

You had a steam game crash and library crash with it, most of the time its seen as not enough free room and game update might be part of this.

this is a newer issue apox sametime with full install validating game just beeing installed , cant say its same issue as that post,

but you need to make steam ticket and tell them this, plenty of guides made with added it again then rep its library and validate game intergrity of files,

im sure you cant see the connection, other then as i tryed to explan happedn apox same time with all the validation alot of user experience, and all this ( check my files could be part of same problem and why things got removed or crashed )

and i cant proof things other then see this as almost maybe same problem with same thingy in the many lost library ( its not we dont have seen it before with remote disk or lost content but this
has now incresed, and we dont have a clue why. )

im not support here , but ask any helper here its every day now with another steam user,

contact steam support let them deal with it., and its end there. sense we as user cant test for things with why it happend so many times with diffrent user. ( from lack of free space to crash with content update, that trigger this with check my files. ) and tell steam this just becuase i see clues about it, is not same as proof it.

ps.
only steam user themself can proof this and admit if disk is near full if you have anything lesser then 200gb free space on all disk harddrive letter , then your point will fall to dust in my book, and, but i dont controll what other do or know about it or brake the 10% rule on 2TB disk thats 200gb, any disk size with lesser size still require same free work space as minimum.

and then gl to you if you did or not follow such old windows recommenndation that is removed on larger disk 4TB+ then % has failed and why % dont work.

this was learn from the past gen win7 with red color disk view and seen as near full )
disk performance was hurt at RPM disk, and why we learn such from the past.

but they forgot the need free space or temp files cant expand or system need it.
alll this is user own mistake now, and noone explan next user , dont have full disk.
many know this, not sure next gen kids know this.

Its cool I found out from the Microsoft community, that since the release of Win 8 they implemented a little unknown and untold program set to on by default called Driver Sense if driver sense feels the need it auto deletes the temp folder for you but it goes a step further and randomly deletes files and folders on your computer without asking for permissions. To me this is a very dangerous feature and should be removed by them because not only did it delete my games but over 5K worth of irreplaceable pictures, I tried all kinds of recovery programs but I didn't look when I began re-downloading my games I had inadvertently overwrite all my pictures making them unrecoverable that's why I say this is a dangerous feature. If you have Windows 8 or above go to settings, storage and turn this feature off and your game files and what not will never be deleted again. Whats weird is this program is supposed to only run when disk space is getting low I have a 1T and still had a little over 450 Gigs of free space

Tell this to steam support, they might want know and change or do something about it, im not even sure steam will accept things get delete if steam need it. ( but as i said temp file and how you did it on your pc might be part of the problem, and without even know what you did or why it happend, and why steam has so many post with it. ( lack of free work space is one thing, what you talk about is lost content and when cleanup app kick in is another matter. ) anyway let steam support know, maybe they do know it already, and other things can cause lost content. sense this is seen as steam issue let them deal with it.

im not so sure this is the issue depend on steam dump things in there that later can be a issue.
dont forget i see things diffrently with i know system need free space, what you seem to trigger is a im full and system is in trouble and try recover more free space, and you user might be caught in system and steam or lost things or as OP and other post now explan with things get delete.

technicaly 3 side issue and they all is part of the problem if you want to look at it from my point of view.

user and steam and MS dump data in a place that all try not know what other did, ( sorry for the explanation but you need to be neutral or see it as all claim not me and yet, it do that. )

get steam support to look at it,im just a user here only , only steam know what user data is and where its dumped in what temp folder. and as you said it MS clean up then lack of free space.

thats my point you all are to blaim, or part of the problem here. ( dont forget other steam 22millions user dont seem to have this problem, then this post will be flooded with angry post. ), with what are you doing steam. ) let me put it this way, within next 24hours, thats 22 million user per hour and 250 to 350 millions of user each day,

hope you can see its odd no more complain over it. ( 100.000 steam user should not be a problem to get within 24hours. ) someday it will happend.

make steam ticket "no ticket" then steam dont have a problem.

ps.
dont forget lost content is flagged as uninstalled and even MS app kick in and remove it or run check disk ( chkdsk ) and see allocated files as unallocated lost can now be terminated
and just because it simple for me to say it , still require steam to check why it happend and proof it, and then maybe have to change or talk with MS even, and that is a diffrent matter now.

Dont expect other have a reply on such, you need to be very skill or know alot about it and know steam from the past and how things can get caught in lost or flagged content as burnout disk, alot of steam user know this, but to Identify or know all about take years to learn steamways and how things work in pc with lost disk, and thats the problem here, todays disk Drive has change its internal startup procedur, they either work or dont at all. there was a time from the past we see bad block on disk, have not seen such over 10 years, so things have change in how system deal with it, and now this.

you need as i said very skill people on such. to see the clues from the past here. in how things was and now it dont tell or show as same old past ways.

we use to run chkdsk alot, with worng FAT or other sick entrys and try fix them that way, and all this part of it here and now.

this is why contact steam support make ticket, because we cant do anything about it as user.

ps.
this could be the very end of remove lost content, im sure alot of steam user will be happy about that, and in the end its up to user to check own problem thats disk is there and content is there and do own validation, unless steam still want to do what user should have done in first places.
ask technicaion and other it support they know this. ( part of the issue then system do automatic cleanup )

It's worth noting it's called storage sense, not drive sense, and is turned off by default, so the majority of people will never have an issue with it.
Iceira Sep 19, 2022 @ 8:48am
As Lithurge explan, why things happend depend on each own PC user and why so few steam users claim things delete itself.

Not sure steam want to part of that solutions as a app. no matter how you look at it. with process of temp and clean up procedur. both have pro and cons here, in how you look at it.
maybe they will change or keep some of it , that still dont explan 350gb DATA, that can be many game and not just few or lost steam lib.

ask steam support and get help from them, cant see any ways out of this, and you might help other steam user in the long run with whatever lost data or content or even avoid it if steam support can see the point we made here or you told them it.

nothing to do with Steam and nothing Valve could do something about.

and:
* called Storage Sense
* by default turned off.
* only affects clearly defined temporary directories, that includes ondrive cloud directories not defined for permanent offline use(meaning these files would be available still in windows/onedrive cloud storage and downloaded on demand) and the windows-defined downloads folder.

if someone has installed Steam or its libraries into those folders, that would be clearly defined user error, as this will not happen otherwise.
