Why are some valve games called hl2 in task manager?
Ever notice how when you want to close the program but you have to use task manager and cause it's not responding and that it's called HL2? It happens to me when I play TF2 or garry's mod. It'll say HL2 (32 bit). I'm guessing it's because of the engine it runs on? Source. This is just a random question because I'm curious. That's all. No real reason.

Based on Source Engine originally appearing in Half Life 2 and those games are also owned by Valve itself.

Steam has born due Half Life 2 if I remember good.

It pretty much started because of half life 2? Wow, that's pretty cool how the game can lead onto all this.

The original Counterstrike was basically a mod for Half Life, even after it became eventually a separate game, they still shared many things, same logos, sound files, same folder names, game files looked very similar too.
Isn't really surprising when they share the very same engine and are made by the same company.

first game on steam was cs, appid 10. beta tests were done with it and Steam was a neccessary solution to bring updates to the users and serverhosters automatically. before that had to be done manually and on every patch the same server/client version differ problems and people complaining that the 20MB patch is too much to handle for their 64kbit isdn connection, some people actually relied on game magazines that had CDs with latest game patches.

hl2 came out ~1 year after steam got officially out of beta.

I didn't know that. That's pretty neat. Thanks though.
