Steam launching itself
NOTE: I am NOT talking about launching on startup. My PC has been on for days, and launching with Windows has been disabled since I first installed Steam.

Steam randomly decides to open itself, which could potentially cause an issue in my house. This has been going on for the last few days. There's no update that's being installed, or anything like that. All I know is that if this continues, Steam will be permanently gone. Steam is starting to act like malware and that is unacceptable.

Steam has common issues in a lot of new and varying ways. They typically won't get back to you in a timely mannor if at all with complaints. Sorry you are having problems. I am dealing with several stemming from Steam's buggy software myself. Good luck

so Steam is closed, not running as any process ... and then it just opens itself without you doing anything?

Yep, I haven't launched Steam myself in about 2 months. Yet, for the last few days, it's been randomly launching itself - sometimes a few times a day.

I've been having the exact same issue for the last 2-3 days. I tried turning on the 'run steam when computer starts", restarting, then turning the option off again. It hasn't happened again, YET, but its only been a little while.
For me when it randomly starts, it always goes to the community page, which I've never visited in my life.

Same here - This is the first time I've posted anything on here....Looks like Steam is going back to it's roots and doing whatever it wants....

So, 2 days later, and steam has been behaving itself for me. No sign of random launching.
Bear in mind that I also changed my passwords and scanned for malware, etc, in case there was a malicious human reason it was launching.

Steam has no reason to start itself when it is not running, nothing that Steam installs can do this. the only thing that starts it is either you, or something else that starts specifically the steam.exe or calls the steam:// browser protocol.

Except, you know, the 'start steam on startup' option that I was discussing above.

Other than it stopped as soon as I tried enabling then disabling that option, I actually have no reason to suspect that was the source of my problem, hacking was my first thought, and probably the correct one.

I just thought I might actually offer to help someone with a similar problem, seeing as how this the the "Help & Tips" forum.

I ended up using a program to disable Steam unless I actually click on the shortcut to open it....Steam was launching itself when my PC had not been rebooted in weeks, its not set to auto-launch under ANY circumstance, and I definitely didn't click on the shortcut, since I was asleep in my bed each time it happened....Thanks for the effort though!

It does for me, I exit Steam and the following day it starts un-commanded and shows me news

What program did you use to disable Steam?

I am having the same issue of Steam launching itself about 5-10 minutes after startup. I bought my gaming laptop 2 weeks ago and only have 2 things installed, Battlenet and Steam, I don't do anything else on it and use a separate laptop for internet, docs, etc. so it's practically a quarantined rig, so I know there is no malware. But for some reason Steam starts itself no matter what Steam or Windows startup settings I disable. I've unchecked the box in for launch Steam on startup in Steam settings, I've went into Windows Task Manager to make sure Steam isn't in the the startup programs section, I've gone to Windows Startup apps and Steam isn't there either. So it makes me think Steam is using some other way besides startup to launch itself. Anyone figure this out yet? This is on Windows 10 on an Acer Nitro 5.
