Steam Link connecting outside of home network?
Ever since I got my steam link I've been puzzled by the idea of perhaps being able to connect steam link to a virtual LAN which would allow me to stream outside of the home network which it requires for now. I am no techie so I have no idea if it even is possible, but I would be interested to know if it is. And I am looking for a straight connection from the host pc to the steam link without the need of other pc. So anyone techie enough, please do contribute and tell me how things are!

(PS: didn't find a steam link subforum, but if there is one be free to move this there)

Thanks!
Lollerobot.

1. Put DD-WRT firmware on your Wi-Fi router (or any other firmware that supports PPTP server functionality).
2. Setup VPN server. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/PPTP_Server_Configuration
3. Find out your router's WAN address in Status-->WAN

4. On remote Windows PC open "Network and Sharing center", click "Setup new connection"-->"Connect to a workplace"---->"Use my internet connection (VPN)" and input WAN IP from Step 3 with Login and Password you set up in Step 2.
5. Use this newly created connection to acces your LAN from remote PC. Should work with any local services, including Steam Link.

UPDATE: OK, read you question more carefuly. Do you mean that you want to carry your Steam Link to, say, your friend's house and connect it to his TV and stream games from your PC in your home?

In this case, you would need to configure your friend's router to act like PPTP client on Step 4. This will merge your 2 LANs together and your Steam Link will "see" your home PC.

Note, that using Internet (and 2 separate Wi-Fi networks) for streaming will introduce a delay that can severely damage your gaming experience.

Thank you for this answer! I will test this out. I know the possible delay problems, but still worth the try!

do not even try that under 30mbit upload.
I've got 100mbit upload, speed isn't a problem

Did it work out?
Yes, inquiring minds wish to know! There is a sale on Amazon, dropping the Steam Link cost to $20 and this would be super useful for casting when remote, if it could be pointed back to home network (a la Moonlight service, which uses nVidia Gamestream protocol to allow remote connections.
A couple more options -- rather than reprogramming your friend's router, you could take your own (2nd) router with you, configured to connect to your own VPN. Plug in the "WAN" Ethernet jack on the back to a "LAN" jack on your friend's router. Then use your Steam Link to connect to your own (2nd) router's Ethernet (LAN).

This way, you are essentially taking your VPN tunnel with you, and you don't need to mess with your friend's router settings. You can find DD-WRT capable routers in the $20-40 range.

Another option would be to bring a Windows laptop to your friend's house. Connect to his network, then connect to your own home's VPN with the laptop's VPN client, then turn on "Internet Connection Sharing" and plug your Steam Link into your laptop's Ethernet. There's also a way to broadcast a wifi network via ICS, and there are ways to accomplish the same thing on Mac and Linux. Again, the idea is that your are carrying your VPN tunnel with you, so you don't need to mess with your friend's router.

A really enterprising person could probably figure out how to make this "portable tunnel" idea with a smartphone using its hotspot capabilities.
or for the easy fix if you don't have PPTP is to just open UDP ports 27031-27036 and TCP ports 27036-27037 on your own router at home. and when selecting a computer select use other computer and type in your IP Address (you can find it at whatsmyip) and you should see your computer select it and go, havn't tested it with my connection yet I may have to increase my upload speed which I plan to do I"ll let you know how it works with 5 up 45 down but from what I heard and read a minimum upload speed is 10 mbps I tested this at first by connecting steam link to my mobile hotspot so it would be outside the network and use the cellular network this wasn't ideal as I only have 1 bar of 4gLTE in my apartment which gave horrible speeds, going to try it at my mom's place today to see how it goes while visiting for easter. just for at least Jackbox party pack.. now granted this isn't as secure as using a VPN so I will give that disclaimer there..
