Can you please explain more by what you mean here ? Steam should not be totally killing your "internet" connection, but maybe you mean the Steam network is what you lose connection with ?
More detail here, please, if you can. Thanks.
When i download a game true steam, my internet goes off completely, when i use origin or uplay to download a game it works perfectly fine while downloading, i am using a wired conection from modem to router to pc.
al wired.
So you are actually saying that you can be watching a YouTube video, for example, and at the same time log into your Steam account and the brouser running the YouTube video just totally crashes or stops playing or other ? You are saying that you cannot even brouse the web while you are attempting to log into your Steam account ?
I suggested for you to bypass the router to test that as a possibility. We see routers as being the culprit quite often here. If you want to troubleshoot this problem effectively, then frist bypass the router by running an ethernet cable directly from your PC to your modem.
DO NOT junp through the router. This is also the first step given on the support page relevant to troubleshooting network connectivity issues, as you can see here....

I work for my ISP, which my friend owns. I have an uncapped dsl circuit at home that syncs consistently around 20mb. I am not throttling my connection at home or work and no where in our network is steam limited. I have tried several of our modems of various models, memory, and firmware. We primarily use Zhone modems with a Broadcomm chipset. These modems can easily handle a 20mb connection. I always use a wired connection at home. PC to modem and no routers between them.
I have started a Steam download and watched my connection drop all the way to the Verizon Central Office, where our equipment is located. That equipment shows the modem disconnecting and reconnecting until it eventually doesn't reconnect anymore. Power cycling the modem and pc will get the connection back until I start downloading in Steam again. The modem and MALC equipment I am on at the CO and the modem both have Broadcomm chipsets so there is no compatibility issue along the entire circuit.
I would appreciate some suggestions. I can provide any additional info, if needed. I'm going to try one more modem over the weekend and will update with results.
I have fixed these problems SirHorse by going to windows 10, for some weird reason the last steam update and windows 7 dropped down the internet while downloading true steam, hope this helps.
Windows 10 fixed this for me.
I don't see that you have attempted to change your download region in your downloads settings to troubleshoot this problem, so I suggest you try that also to see if that helps.
Also, have you considered your NIC drivers and/or device as being maybe the problem here and not the other network hardware ? Can your PC use a wireless connection ? You can maybe try that as a step to troubleshoot this, therefore not using the NIC to connect, you see.
I would suggest the regions change first, just as a quick test. Change the region several times to several different locations before you think that does not help.
If you decide to change to Windows 10, then make sure that drivers exist for your NIC and/or wireless devices in that PC before you do. Many are upgrading to Windows 10 without even knowing if their PCs can actually run Windows 10 and there are drivers for all of their hardware and that OS.
I have this same issue. The internet disconnects on whatever computer I am using whenever I try and download anything from steam. This is pretty ridiculous. Steam is the only thing that does this to my computer.
I tried changing the download location.
If I disconnect the wifi and reconnect my internet comes back on line but if I start downloading on steam it will shut off again.
Very frustrating.
Windows 10 fixed this for me.
I saw that but upgrading to windows 10 is not an option for me at this time.
just started getting the additional log in pop up
First i recently moved went from Verizon fios :), to ATT DSL :(
it only started happening when i moved, steam never had a problem on fios , but DL'ing a game on att dsl starts fine on steam then goes to no connection every 30-60 seconds and just keeps doing that over and over but works fine when playing the game or browsing steam.
also i know when im downloading on steam all other computers connected to our router internet start stopping and starting over and over again.
and since i doubt ATTDSL is only limiting steam data router problem i know its maybe a router problem, like my ps4 can connect to the internet but cant actually connect to the PlayStation network.
Ive never seen the words win 10 and fixed in the same sentence, lol kidding only the 2 time
im on win 7 will be going to linux after microsoft stops updating 7 since win 10 has to many unacceptable features
When i download a game on steam, my whole internet connexion gets shut down (from my browser to all devices at home LOL)
It only happens on steam, got nothing wrong with origin, uplay, epic and battlenet when i downloaded games.
Is there any fix? i don't feel like f*cking with my router for an issue that obviously comes from steam.
Like maybe once every 2-3 game I download, either Steam loses connection alone, or it shuts off my internet completely until I reboot the computer.
And it happens ONLY when I download a game on Steam.
