Steam games taking up disk space after uninstaling them.

I could not uninstall several steam games through windows uninstaller, and could not delete the local content from steam. so I went in and manually deleted the game files. Windows still shows my hard drive shows I only freed up about 5 Gb, even after emptying the trash bin (about 100 Gb).

Disable Shadow copies and Shadow protection and System Restore next time.

Use Clonezilla to backup / restore if required.

Saves so much disk space.

find the culprits with this tool.

before you try the advanced bullcrap the other 2 here are suggesting which can totally screw up your system, try this:

- check space on both/all partitions/disks
- uninstall a steam game
- also delete the game files in the corresponding steam install directory.
- check space again

if the space changed, everything is fine and you just misread somewhere before
if space did not change, you have a problem.

@ the other 2: this is a reproduction procedure. and what you suggest is an open knife which needs an experienced user to understand what that can actually do. also even if shadowcopies exist, they are copies, so if a directory of 20gb is deleted, 20gb are set free.,doesn't matter how many shadowcopies exist.

I used vssadmin, and I don't have any shadow copies, so I don't think that is what is going on.

20 gig folder in recovery image/ drivers/ regular/

45 gigs program file/steam/steamapps/

the rest seems to be fairly small folders

you never mentioned your free disk spaces, so these numbers don't mean anything for me. if those values don't seem reasonable for you, how big are your drives/partitions and how much free space?

- hiberfil.sys is when you use sleep/standby/hibernatemode or the system uses it for you.
- 20gb of recovery stuff that came with the system when you bought it?
- 45gb of steam games, can be one game, can be 1000, depends on the games. i personally have 150 installed steam games that take 260gb, 40gb of that is MKX .. if you need comparsion values.

120 gb ssd with my OS, my second drive has over 800 free so I am not woried about that. the SSD had about 10 gigs left on it. I disabled hibernate, which freed up 13 gigs,

I do not know about the 20 gigs, I built the computer and threw windows 10 on. so I assume it started off with o gigs in the recovery folder.

I have made it a point to only install games on my HDD, but it looks like the 45 gigs on there were from just two games, I was able to uninstall them from steam and install them onto the HDD, so I have about 60 gigs free now. I am still surprised though I don't know what could be taking up the last 40 gigs, 12 for the OS 20 for the recovery only 3 in program files now. so only 35 gigs accounted for.

Download WizTree for free to find those pesky files that linger on after they've been uninstalled(up to 15g per game!) You can delete these files directly from WizTree and empty your recycling bin afterwards. I saved myself a lot of space doing this

Try looking steam in the search engine right click it and say uninstall and it will bring u to a window with all downloads. If deleting the app doesnt work gotta reboot ur drives.
