Tried downloading Lost Ark, canceled, and now 50GB of my hard drive are gone
I was downloading Lost Ark, and had just enough (I thought) to download the game. It had to download an addiitional 4GB, which was too much for my system, so it was just sitting there not doing anything. I canceled the download, andI uninstalled the game, and now 50GB are permanently LOST from my hard drive.

What, if anything can I do to recover that space?

Nevermind, I uninstalled Steam, and it fixed the missing storage space. Fixed now, with a clean re-install.

go in your steam folder, then steamapps/downloading. delete the file and it will be fixed. if it doesnt helps, delete everything from %temp%

Yup, all you had to do was delete it from the "downloading" folder as the other user mentioned for SteamApps.

You don't need to do anything else.

I actually looked there and there weren't any files, but thanks for the replies!

download files are not only in downloading, depending on what the state of the download was, downloading files might be in:
./steamapps/depotcache/
./steamapps/downloading/
./steamapps/temp/
and sometimes
./steamapps/corrupt/

these folders exist in every library folder path and one library folder might also make use of an other library folders for free space management ( f.e. C:/ library path might make use of D:/ path )

on download issues or free space problems the contents of those directories can be deleted safely but it is recommended to always exit Steam before manually handling files related to Steam

the "clear download cache" function within Steam settings -> downloads might do the same as described above, never investigated what the function really does, killing the files manually is quicker for me.
