1Gbps??

I have very good internet atleast i think so.. 1Gbps, yet when downloading games currently im getting only 500kbs. I normally get much, much.. much higher download speeds. Any ideas? usually im about 10x this speed

just did a speed test for xfinity i have 32ping, download speed avg: 6.15 Mbps (peak 7.4)........upload speed avg: 11.99 (peak 12.20)
like i said usually on steam im at 5-7 Mbps

If you didn't select MB/s (megabytes/s) then 6.5 mbps (megabits per second) is roughly 787 KB/s. Steam reports in megabytes not megabits. It takes 8 bits to make 1 byte.

Okay, so unless you opted into the Steam beta, Steam measures download speeds in megabytes (MB, capital B) while Speed Test measures in megabits (Mb, lowercase B). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 7.4 megabits would be around 900 kilobytes, while 6.15 would be about 770 kilobytes. So it's not a massive difference, but you could try changing your download region, or closing other programs that may be using the Internet in the background.

That is not even near a 1 Gbps internet connection.
An 1 Gbps connection would be 1000 mbps in that test , not 6,15. You dont even have 1% of a Gbps connection.

i appreciate the help im not a computer guy lol. But i can definitivly say my ethernet connection that im looking at currently says Speed:1Gbps. Also i dont even know what steam beta is but as im downloading this game as we speak it says Current= KB/s 600 download speed

Your ethernet connection is your computer's connection to your router. Not your actual internet speed, just your local (house/apt) network.

that 1Gbps is just from your computer to the "internet box". ask your parents what they actually pay for.

So, basically there's a theoretical limit of how much information your network card or router can process (in this case 1 gigabit of data, per second) and then there is how much speed your Internet Service Provider actually provides.

Think of it like water going down a drain. The drainpipe might wide enough for 1 litre of water to pass through per second, but that doesn't mean that your faucet will output 1 litre of water per second. In this analogy, the drainpipe would be the upper limit imposed by hardware, while the faucet would represent the actual limit imposed by your ISP.
