If they're just not running, and dump you back to desktop, then you should first check your antivirus suite to see if anything game related or steam related is being blocked. If it is, then make exceptions for them.
/help/systeminformation
copy all and post it here
It happens from time to time.
Go to your anti virus suite (or any other security suite if you have it) and check if there's anything realted to steam or those games that have been quarantined. If they have, make exceptions for them.

You have to make sure such programs are not negatively impacting Steam or games :
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1F39-DCB4-FF28-5748
I found nothing on the anti virus software. Nothing mentioned regarding Steam or the games. I have found a few other games that are having the same issue.
Looking online for ideas I found these on the link below, hopefully I will have time to watch and try them later today, what do you think of them?
https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?&q=how+to+find+out+if+any+steam+games+have+been+affected+by+anti+virus+software&qpvt=how+to+find+out+if+any+steam+games+have+been+affected+by+anti+virus+software&mid=CCA921382ED5B9E1B0FDCCA921382ED5B9E1B0FD&&FORM=VRDGAR
Thank you for this suggestion, I can't find anything on the list on my computer that could be causing the issues. Obviously I have anti virus software etc, but they are not saying anything about preventing Steam or the games concerned.
Maybe there is some hidden program that I am unaware of, that was pre-installed on my computer or has found it's way on without my knowledge, but I can't find anything.
Any suggestions, I found these videos on the link below, i haven't tried them yet, hopefully something will help, what do you think of them?

There may not be any obvious signs that an antivirus program, or other security software, is causing an issue.
Some of these have background processes that run out of sight, and can cause conflicts where you won't see them being the cause.
Programs like McAfee and Norton are notorious for this, and are also commonly seen as part of a "trial" period when the laptop is newly purchased. It's best to add real-time scan exceptions for Steam and all games to be sure the antivirus will leave them alone in real-time scanning. Some have folder options, so you can just add the entire Steam folder to the exceptions list where your antivirus software will ignore them in real time.
And even then, those that I exampled (McAfee and Norton) are terrible with Steam and games.
Since you said your system has played these games before without issue, and since you also said there are multiple games that have the issue, one of the most logical conclusions is that something on your PC has changed such as a software conflict that was not present before.
Using msconfig and Task Manager will show you what programs are running and that start when your PC starts. I can't say for sure what the problem is, so I can only offer suggestions, of course.
IMPORTANT : If any software conflicts are resolved (antivirus for example), then you must verify the game files AFTER resolving the conflict. This helps to ensure that Steam and the game files are clean and intact.
Using msconfig
