Steam has given me a Free Full Version of Portal as a Gift
I have no idea why or when but I was just looking at my inventory today and under "STEAM" section I saw it said portal, at first I figured this was one of those things you can't sell or a card or something, but when I read the description it said it was a steam gift, and that it is the full game.

Now what is strange about this is two things.

1. I already own and have installed portal 1 and 2.
2. It says I can gift it to someone.

So this is not a gift per se from steam but a free game I can use or send as a gift.

My issue is before I go and gift this to someone, I would like to know if anyone can explain for what reason steam has given this game to me?

Also if this has to do with Steam Spotlight, does it still show up in my inventory even if I own the game, and again, it looks like its the full game, not a trial.

I have not pre-ordered anything.

here is the most recent transactions I've had with steam, aside from selling inventory items, I recently bought 3 games, move or die, speedrunners and polarity.

I had both speedrunners and polarity refunded to me though as 1 was crap and the other I had no friends who owned it, so with my refund I bought rocket league.

Other than those series of transactions I have had no other purchase history with steam.

there is no purchase history as it is not a purchase, it is a gift item, there is no record or notifications telling me who gave this gift to me. but for it to be a virus seems unlikely only because people cannot force items into your inventory without your consent (unless your steam), even with a virus on my computer I don't see how an item could have been unknowingly and unwillingly placed into my inventory.

if there is nothing in you inventory history then it must be a gift because of another purchase or key activation.

Purchasing any Valve game bundle with a game you already own it, will normally gift you a gift copy of the game you already own. So if you owned Portal already and say bought the Orange Box, you would have received a Portal 1 gift.
