See, I didn't have to unlearn anything when I started using the Steam controller... which I can imagine is easier than being acclimated to another controller first.
The idea was likely both to try to get away from Windows since Microsoft may want to sell the games themselves making Steam irrelevant there and to help console gamers who want a controller and who want to play on the TV and who want simplicity to consider PC gaming.
What some said about the Steam controller really makes it shine. Still, what others said about the 360 being tested with games and also games being developed with it in mind make good points as well.
How to decide indeed, right ?
thanks for that. I didn't know that. All I knew was there was a console out. That's all I really knew about it.

Note price compared to xbox 360 pc microsoft controller:

The thing is that it took time for SteamOS to reach 1.0 and took time for the controller to be ready. Alienware sold their little machine with Windows (I think) and the 360 controller, that works at-least as good I'd say but it wasn't really the SteamOS machine with the Steam controller which may have been what people expected with the announcement. And when it all was ready the hype most likely have settled down.
I've got the impression that even the soon to be released Bristol Ridge APUs will be more powerful than the previous Kaveri/Godaveri based ones, so maybe real soon now one could build such a machine which can outperform/equal the Playstation 4?
I assume Steam may use the SteamVR brand and maybe someone will do Steam equiped machines with good enough hardware and the HTC Vive headset and sell those as a bundle or something.
They will use the same AM4 socket as the future Zen/Summit Ridge processors.
It's hard to beat the Playstation 4 for VR as is though. You can get the console for $350 and VR headset, headphones, camera and move controllers are bundled for $500 so that's a total of $850 for a complete experience there.
The Oculus Rift cost $600 and doesn't include controllers let alone the $800+ PC.
The HTC Vive at $800 include their stations and controllers but the PC experience cost twice as much as the Sony Playstation one.
The displays have almost the same resolution as far as I can tell. I earlier read a claim which stated otherwise but for all I can see it's 1920x1080 split into two on the Playstation 4 at up to 120 Hz vs 2160x1200 with Rift and Vive at up to 90 Hz.
I'll be sure to look at that! Thanks!
