What ever happen to steam selling movies ?
I swore they use to.

They did, they had a whole section for buying streaming movies and even tv series.
But it was not very successful so a few year ago they retired the entire section and also discontinued their video player app.

I still own a bunch of tv series from that time on Steam, like the first 2 seasons of Evil Dead, all of Spartacus and Black Sail and a few movies.
Still works, even though the video player app has been retired, just plays over your internet browser now.

They did indeed but stopped the service in 2019 because it just wasn't popular enough.

they where even selling several anime franchises at some points.

anime:
it was mainly crunchyroll that did sell animes here.
they boarded in 2017 when Steam Direct was about to be done and that eliminated most manual labor on Valves end involving someone releasing something on Steam. that made anime the biggest video content genre on Steam leading up to its discontinuation. there were well over 100 shows.
