please help me set up a switch pro controller properly
I really just dont understand why this is so hard. plug in switch controller, steam recognizes it for what it is, gives me an option to swap a/b and x/y so the default xbox layout in some games doesnt drive me nuts. sounds great.

thing is, no matter what combination of settings i use i cant get any game to have the proper input and icons. using hollowknight as an example;

steam input for switch; enabled
nintendo button layout; enabled

controls are backwards; jump is A, attack is X. icons are correct, i can rebind it to play the game, but menu control remain reversed without any way to change it.

steam input for switch; enabled
nintendo button layout; disabled

controls are correct, jump is B, attack is Y. but the icons are reversed and all descriptions of buttons are wrong.

steam input for switch; disabled

no inputs detected at all. doesnt matter what other options are toggled. without steam input for switch, hollow knight doesnt detect the controller.

it is infuriating because it feels like the solution should be so simple, and so close. i just want the button icons from the first setup and the actual input from the second. and i dont understand why i cant get this to happen in any kind of easy way. im having similar difficulties in every game i am trying to play, with some being even odder (like sea of stars deciding right trigger is confirm at the title screen, but then y is confirm after you hit trigger once, with every button seemingly rotated one spot clockwise), but i figure if i can get one set up properly i can use that as a template to get others working properly. any wisdom is very much appreciated

Works for me with the following:

Switch Pro controller wired.
Nintendo Button Layout = Off
Steam Input for Xbox Controllers = On
Steam Input for Switch Controllers = On
Native Controller Input (in-game) = On

The buttons are correct and match the default layout shown in the in-game controller settings.

now i am even more baffled. i copied this and got the same behavior as the second one. the controls are correct compared to the controller layout in options, where there are no labels for the buttons. but when i bring up my inventory and hover over monarch wings, for example, it says it is activated by pressing 'A' when it should say 'B' cause switch controller layout. so the labels for the buttons are still wrong.

Just in case you aren't aware, Xbox controllers use an ABXY layout that is reversed compared to Nintendo's.

They will always be wrong because the game does not recognize the controller as a Switch Pro controller, Steam is just taking the inputs and presenting it to the game as an Xbox controller. This is why the game does nothing when Steam Input is disabled.

As far as Hollow Knight is concerned, you're using an Xbox controller where the lowest face button is A, and the upper face button is Y.

Yeah well I am with Stormy Faire Weather on this one like for example when I'm playin Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga & or Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak on my Switch my light or heavy attacks has & always been Y and X and speaking of X when I wanna skip to the main menu of Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga I press X & it works fine but when I play it on PC with Nintendo Switch Controller it's the same issue that Stormy Faire Weather stated that it's all messed up bro
