How big is your disk drive and how much space have you got left?

Beause one of the most common issues is people using too much of their drive. Valve recommend you use only about 90% of your drive, and leave the space for it to work correctly.

So if Elden Ring has had an update for example, you're going to need to factor that in also.

Thanks for the fast answer. The drive im trying to download the game on is a 480gb ssd with 183 gb left. everything was fine, elden ring first prompt the issue. TRying to put the 49gb game on the 183 gb left, would that be a possible cause or not really? Thanks again!

Hi!

Maybe something to try:

One thing I found. On Windows NTFS drives, the Security Permissions might be funky. Here's how I fixed my issue.

Make sure you're on an Administrator account.
Locate what drive that the game you're having Disk Write Error issues with is on.
Go to that drive in Explorer and right click on the SteamLibrary folder and select Properties.
Go to the Security tab.
Click the Edit button to change permissions.
Click on the Add button.
In the "Select Users and Groups" window that pops up, click in the "Enter the Object Names to Select" box, and type in "Everyone" without quotes and click the "Check Names" button. This will bring you back to the previous window.
In the "Group or User Names" inset window, select "Everyone", and in the Permissions lower inset, turn on the "Full Control" checkbox. This should automatically fill in all the other checkboxes except for "Special Permissions". The "Special Permissions" checkbox should be empty.
Click "OK", and "OK" again until all of the windows you brought up go away. You should see notification type window pop up showing that it's doing something with the files and folders.
Try verifying your game, then if it has an update, do so. It should work fine now.

Have you run any diagnostics on the drive to ensure it's functioning normally? Not with Windows, but with whatever software came with your SSD (like Samsung Magician for example).

Thanks y'all, turns out I tried Wiping manually all the steam files on all my drives and did a new install, worked. When I did not go in manually to uninstall steam, somehow something was still wrong. Have a good one!

Libraryfolder/libraryfolders.vdf was messed up.

If it helps for the future, remember to use the features within Steam to delete games and folders. It avoids issues like this.

I think repair steam library is faster and validate each game could be faster , then DL ( disk I/O is still way faster then DL all games again. ( even if you have 1GB will not help then disk can do 30Gb / 60GB depend on own hardware and pc build even. )

If you dont trust and only need to do it on 1 game. but wipe all seem as a overkill , the validate game intyergrity of files is faster.

but now its to late unless you have restore from trash bin.

Trust me, did not want to resort to the whole wipe. All the verifications on cache, library and individual games were made. Not too tech litterate, can't explain why this happened or happens quite often it seems. Thanks again for your time!

Try removing 'D:\steam\steamapps\appmanifest_228980.acf'
I am guessing there is a file being prevented from being handled by Steam

App ID of 228980 happens to be Steamworks Shared Redistributable Package, which is required to launch ANY of the game published through Steam.
Trying removing <steampath>/steamapps/appmanifest_228980.acf didn't work for my case, but manually purging <steampath>/steamapps/common/Steamworks Shared, including the folder itself, worked.

And again we are back at steam follow game devs and they dont use MS newest VC++.
dont even think we are are rude here, with what steam and game devs is doing.

All this is from 2015 to 2024, util we notice the combined update, and actual dont solve , then you reset windows and install a old game even. and never learn what MS has as newest update, or other new game that use newest.

gl understamd use newest update actual matter. ( users own problem atm,. )

if anyone ever has this issue just go in to downloads their should be a failed steamworks common redistributables trying to download everytime you open a game. Just cancel out the download and it should redownload instantly and write correctly and everything should work.
