US federal law. Valve is legally obligated to collect your information at a certain point in order to continue allowing you to use the market.

Money you make on the market counts as income and the government can tax you on it. If you make more than $20,000 on the market within a calendar year, your earnings will be reported to the IRS.

If you aren't in the US, there's an option for that when you go to fill out the form.

Funny then .. they collect that information by the number of items sold... was it not 200. ???

So that would mean that each trade in a year would have to be 100 dollars.. which is highly doubtful.. this information is MOST cases is not needed.. yet they collect it anyways.

If its a dollar amount .. they should only ask if that dollar amount is overed.. yet they ask per 200 items sold in a year.

I sold cards.. for pennies.. and was required this information.. which of course steam is not going to get. Not that I will ever use the market again on account of the rediculous hurdles that one has to jump.

That's not how it works. After 200 sales on the market you have to fill out those forms.
If you are a citizen of the USA and make more than 20 000 US Dollars in a year by selling stuff on the Steam marketplace, you have to pay taxes. Doesn't matter in how many sales, it's the gross income that counts.

If you are not a citizen of the USA then you don't have to pay taxes to the IRS.
If you are a citizen of the USA and make less than 20 0000 US Dollars on the Steam marketplace, then you don't have to pay taxes to the IRS.

Okay .. so this brings be back to the same issue..

Why does Steam require the form to be filled out with 200 ten cent cards sold. when the form is NOT required until you sell 20,000 dollars. I smell a fish..

It is still rediculous. They should go by the MONITARY amount.. not the number of things sold before they present me with this paperwork.

Because the IRS requires the information based on that criteria.

Even Paypal has to abide by it.

And Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/gds/Ebay-ONLINE-SELLING-PAYPAL-IRS-taxes-changes-2011-6050w-/10000000012219838/g.html

Any issues with this should be brought up with the IRS and/or your congressmen as it is not something that is in Valve's control. They are just following the laws.

If Valve had a say, I'm sure that it would be to go by the dollar amount, since that would effect the least amount of users.

Thats okay.. I'm done with the market anyways.. they seem to have gone out of their way to make the service crappy for those who do not own a cell phone... they just keep adding to the pile.

I wonder why I even bothered with this service to begin with .. oh yea.. I wanted to game.

Slowly Steam has shown its true colors.. the list grows longer.

Too bad really for steam.

I'm going to look into the IRS requirement for items sold and not a dollar amount.. and I might just do as you state.. and take it up with IRS and my congressmen.

Because they are just collecting the information now, not actually sending it. It doesnt get sent until the 20k threshold is exceeded. Anyone that says Valve is sending it in when you fill out that form is wrong.

OP, scroll down to "Taxes and 200 Item Sale Limit", but the whole page is a good read.

No, if you read that page I linked, this is also coverd there.

"Why do I have to provide additional documentation if I haven't reached 200 market sales?"

"We request this information early on so that you have time to fill it out accurately. Validation by the third party can take time, if you hit the 200 limit without the form validated you will not be able to sell additional items until validation is complete."

More information FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

I love how conspiracy nuts think "Steam" is collecting information that any business is required by federal law to collect if you make money through them.

According the previous posts.. steam collects the information before it is even needed.. it IS steam that wants to collect it before it is even required.

Red my friend, I just posted the text from the support page. It clearly explains why they request it early, man.

Steam and trust are not two words that mix these days.. hey whatever.. I already have no interest in contiuning all the extras that I used to enjoy without all these rediculous blockades.. aside of the government information collection..

So .. you know what.. it doesn't really matter to me.

What does.. is the service that I am used to .. the REASON I bought most of my games here is certainly NOT the same anymore...

Say what you will.. quote official steam sources all you would like, doesnt make them any less right.. or wrong..

I'm aggitated beyond all belief at all the nonsence that steam has pulled these past few years.. and they do not seem like they are letting up anytime soon.

I cannot be the only one that feels that way.. TOS or no TOS..

carry on..
