If this is your first game you should probably start smaller and make something in something like Game Maker or RPG Maker, if you think you're going to be able to make a decent 3D game without any experience, you're dead wrong.

Source Engine licensing: sourceengine@valvesoftware.com

ask them
Hello CPU Renny Heart,
There is no license for the Source Engine since 2015.
The creating and selling of a Source Game is given as long es you sell the game on Steam.

there is.
Q. Is there a licensing fee for using the Source Engine?
A. There is no fee for using the Source Engine for your free mod, but there may be licensing fees for included tools if you charge money for your game.

Q. Can I sell my Source Engine game on Steam?
A. Yes, but there are a few requirements:

You will need to complete an additional agreement for distributing a paid Source Engine product on Steam.
If you are using the RAD tools included with the Source SDK, you will need to contact RAD for information and cost associated with licensing MILES and/or BINK.
For any Source Engine game that charges money, Havok needs to be paid a licensing fee of $25,000 for the physics engine. You will need to pay this fee up front before making your game available for sale on Steam.
You can only sell your Source Engine game via Steam unless you get a full Source Engine license.

free game on steam with no mentioning of donation begging anywhere in the game and on steam = ok.

as soon as you do that it becomes a commercial project = not free anymore.

They stop the license for source engine at the Game Developers Conference 2015 and announce source engine 2.

Maybe its a license for Source 2.

But if he got a big team and money why not.
Your best bet make something with unity, unreal, or cry engine. Better options with being more updated and you're not wasting 25,000$ of hard earned money lol
never gonna make my mod now my dreams are crushed!
