I had 10+ chat tabs open. I just focused the Steam Chat window to start reading and responding to messages. Steam closed immediately after I opened the Chat window ( I didn't even click on any of the tabs; the only one that was up was the first one ).
ALL of the messages were unread by me. Now, all of the messages are GONE because Steam saw fit to restart itself for an update; of which I didn't give authorization especially because I was trying to read chats and I had a game open...
This is a major bug and it needs to be fixed. I need access to those chat messages and I need access to them now; please mark them un-read or whatever so they appear under "X Unread Chat messages".
Thanks for merging the post, there is clearly an issue with Steam forums which prevents editing of posts, at least until someone replies but I haven't tried editing it just yet... There is also an issue of Steam forums preventing you from responding to your own thread ( if you can't edit then surely you should be able to add to your topic by replying ) but it prevented me from responding which is why the new thread was necessary.
Again, please read the complaint first.

Try this.
Replying seems to work, so you still don't need more then on thread.
"Sorry, some kind of error has occurred: The settings on this account do not allow you to add comments."
This is the error I got when trying to edit my original post. And it is the error I got when trying to reply to my original post after trying to edit my original post which is why I posted a new topic. Now, since the two have been merged I seem to be able to edit any new message I post and I seem able to post...
"Sorry, some kind of error has occurred: The settings on this account do not allow you to add comments."
It seems like a local issue, so refreshing your Steam files could fix it.
Spamming the error and not even trying what is being suggest, won't help.
Once I have a solid way to reproduce it then I will happily try it ( despite this being a new install of Steam anyway as I am on Windows 10 x64 pro which is also freshly installed ).
I don't mean any disrespect with spamming the error but there was no achknowledgement that it had even been read with the only message coming from you being a warning leaving the or-else... to imagination and having already been on the receiving end of corrupt moderators ( Kerbal Space Program mod accused me of slander when I reported a bug to a mod-manager when I posted that there was an issue in the third-party app which wouldn't let me update, install or do anything with mods and I provided my configuration and all... Being accused of slander, and subsequently being permanently banned by 2 corrupt moderators for this made my access to KSP mods impossible thereby eliminating my ability to play the game for trying to help the developer of a third-party app by reporting a valid bug is a major issue and I can't stand corrupt mods... I have tried contacting Steam support and have never received any help in the matter so I essentially have no choice but to apply for a file fraud charges against them for taking my money and banning me in addition to defamation for falsely accusing me of slander ) in the past, I wasn't going to take it.
Another issue with the chat logger is that it rarely updates the file-modified timestamp when it saves chats to a file which means there is no way to know which chats to read.. I'm going to modify the program and submit a pull-request after fixing it when I have time...
I tutor a long of people in Logic and programming languages so missing messages is a big issue; the chat logs are for the people I teach and also to serve as a cache so I can create tutorials out of them when new questions are asked ( I have written over 500+ tutorials I share over dropbox until I can find time to get my site back up; broken neck and back plus trying to release a few other things takes up most of the time that I am able to sit down and do something )..
Because of the issue of not knowing when a file is updated means it isn't reliable to find out what chats you missed...
Another thing that'd help is if you can log out of Steam Mobile chat ( I disabled all push notifications but chats are still forced there ) which takes chats away from pc and leads Steam thinking the messages have been read when they haven't... If I log completely out of Steam mobile I'm hit with a 15 day turn-around for trades... All of these new "features" seem like punishments.
For things like that steamchat is not the proper tool, get a real chat/pm software.

2. LICENSES
A. General Content and Services License
"For reasons that include, without limitation, system security, stability, and multiplayer interoperability, Steam may need to automatically update, pre-load, create new versions of or otherwise enhance the Content and Services and accordingly, the system requirements to use the Content and Services may change over time. You consent to such automatic updating. You understand that this Agreement (including applicable Subscription Terms) does not entitle you to future updates, new versions or other enhancements of the Content and Services associated with a particular Subscription, although Valve may choose to provide such updates, etc. in its sole discretion."
Also, that agreement doesn't state that it will restart Steam in those automatic updates thereby closing all work that you have open which uses Steam DRM, and kicking you out of all games.. There is no mention of that and that is what I do not consent to.
