xbox 360 pad will not connect
how do you fix this?
my wired 360 pad just blinks instead of selecting #1
making all my games unplayable if you have no controller :(
yes the drivers are fine before we go there

Is the wire attached to it, or is it a wireless controller with a play and charge kit and can you disconnect the wire from the controller?

Also, tried different USB ports?
it sounds like it must be the play and charge kit
yea you can disconnect the wire from the controller.
tried with all 3 xbox 360 pads and all 8 usb ports
The play and charge kit doesn't carry any signals, it just charges the battery. You need this[support.xbox.com] to connect a wireless pad to the PC.
it normally works
this is what mine looks like

you plug the usb in the pc and the other end in the pad and normally you can play your games
but now all it's doing is flashing and not connecting

Now you are contradicting yourself, you show a photo of a wired XBox 360 controller, where the cable can not be disconnected from the controller.
But you claim it's the same and you can disconnect the cable. Which clearly indicates you have a wireless 360 controller. Which needs a receiver to transmit data, not a play&charge kit which only connects to the controller battery.

Does it look like this:

ffs, thats what it looks like sorry

I said it sounds like its the play and charge kit
it can be disconnected from the pad but you just plug it in the back and then it should select #1 and then you can play.
pads are not selecting #1,they're just flashing which means no games work :(
anyway, back on point how do you get the pc to work with the pad when it keeps flashing?

By buying the wireless receiver.

Yep, that's a wireless controller, not a wired one.
What you are using is the play&charge cable, which only connects your PC and the rechargeable battery inside the controller.
What you need is the wireless receiver which communicates with the controller.
You can't connect wireless Xbox 360 controller though cable to play games on PC, you need the wireless receiver for that. Microsoft made it so the Play and Charge Kit only receives power not data.
it connects to either the xbox or pc and allows you to play
I have to stop it flashing and get it to select #1 so I can actually play
how? :/
It won't work on PC, what don't you understand? Wireless controller need receiver for PC, end of story.
This is what you need to connect controller to PC: http://techlobby.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/zx6000adapter.jpg

ok,so you guys don't know what you're talking about.
go back to sleep and allow someone who does know the answer to reply.
we are not talking about the wireless reciever here,
we are talking about a 360 pad being used with a pc using the lead to connect it.
the pad connected with with lead works fine on pc,always has done

Can't have. There's no connection between the buttons and triggers and the lead.
Describe the connection AT the controller.

If a round connector unplugs a few inches from the controller, it is a wired controller.

If the cord unplugs directly at the controller, it is a plug and CHARGE kit and will not work on PC without the wireless receiver. Period.

owner of an official wired 360 and wireless 360 pad here. you need the wireless receiver for the wireless pad in order to work with PC. the blinking stuff is because it is charging, what the only purpose of that plug is.
