Also, tried different USB ports?
yea you can disconnect the wire from the controller.
tried with all 3 xbox 360 pads and all 8 usb ports
this is what mine looks like
http://winsupersite.com/site-files/winsupersite.com/files/archive/winsupersite.com/content/content/127496/reviews/xbox360_hw_08.jpg
you plug the usb in the pc and the other end in the pad and normally you can play your games
but now all it's doing is flashing and not connecting
But you claim it's the same and you can disconnect the cable. Which clearly indicates you have a wireless 360 controller. Which needs a receiver to transmit data, not a play&charge kit which only connects to the controller battery.
Does it look like this:

I said it sounds like its the play and charge kit
it can be disconnected from the pad but you just plug it in the back and then it should select #1 and then you can play.
pads are not selecting #1,they're just flashing which means no games work :(
anyway, back on point how do you get the pc to work with the pad when it keeps flashing?
What you are using is the play&charge cable, which only connects your PC and the rechargeable battery inside the controller.
What you need is the wireless receiver which communicates with the controller.
I have to stop it flashing and get it to select #1 so I can actually play
how? :/
This is what you need to connect controller to PC: http://techlobby.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/zx6000adapter.jpg
go back to sleep and allow someone who does know the answer to reply.
we are not talking about the wireless reciever here,
we are talking about a 360 pad being used with a pc using the lead to connect it.
the pad connected with with lead works fine on pc,always has done
Can't have. There's no connection between the buttons and triggers and the lead.
If a round connector unplugs a few inches from the controller, it is a wired controller.
If the cord unplugs directly at the controller, it is a plug and CHARGE kit and will not work on PC without the wireless receiver. Period.
