check the URL bar before you login into Steam to prevent phishing, the only valid Steam URLs:

http://steamcommunity.com/

If so, that's the only way without knowing your prior password. If you can't receive the e-mail, try whitelisting noreply@steampowered.com and checking all the filters.
Alternatively add a phone number and restore it via the former link.

He could open up the said page on the client's internal browser (i.e. going to the said page while in Big Picture Mode, or in the in-game browser; that way he'd already be signed in on Steam.)
It wouldn't be bad practice for him to change the password though, so it's something he can actually use too.
