How to know if someone is actually Discord Support Staff?
Hi, I got a DM this morning from someone saying they accidently reported my account and directed me to DM a "Staff Member" who was helping with their ticket. Is it normal to get Steam support over discord? I was a bit worried as their account was new. The "Staff" said that my account is pending a ban for duplicated items but I honestly hardly ever use steam and I dont trade or anything like that ever really.

Anyways this "Staff" asked me to confirm a wizard recovery from steam to authenticate my account but it just all seemed off so I told the "Staff" that I wasnt comfortable and that I would submit a ticket with steam (which I have done now).

Anyways, any advice would be amazing because as I said I rarely even use it for skyrim once every year or so lol.

There is no such thing as Steam Support on Discord. No Valve/Steam employee will contact you via a 3rd party app.

So much, this!

There is no such thing as Valve/Steam talking to someone on Discord. Support is only offered through support tickets. If you are not communicating through a support ticket, then you will not be talking to support staff.

Steam has no reasons to use any other app. They have your email for contact at the very least.

There should be a thread locked in all forums saying that Steam will never contact you though Discord in capital letters.

It was just very strange as they sent me an image of a ticket. As I dont use steam I have no way to verify if it was a legit ticket & in said ticket it said to DM discorduser#0000

this is the screenshot the original user sent me before I contacted "seapunkcaptain".

The grammar alone should have been easy enough. Do yourself a huge favor, look up info on scams. Knowledge is power. You were smart enough to not fall for that crap, but most people don't take the time to learn about these things in order to protect themselves.

They won't contact you through Steam friend chat either, while we're at it.

Malware bytes too has a nice article on a typical scam that happens on Steam.
...

Discord Staff members can be recognized by their lefty stance, twitter entries and blog posts. They're quite the activist.
Aside that they also sell a lot of stakes and information to China. (but their EULA says they don't sell your information? Well.... they say that and they say "but we do allow third parties access to our servers and all the information on it for copying reasons if they pay for this"
and it is discord's main source of income. In fact, discord premium (nitro+) is just a coverup to keep you thinking that is how they get money, because most people don't look up the true business details of discord. So with people unknowingly sharing everything; ... yeah- I mean discord is also controlling, etc. They're practically worse than facebook at the moment.)

So, now you know the company's administrations personality and you can figure out the staff.

Staff is reachable by email and inquiries on their website only.

Valve staff is only reachable via Steam Support.

They don't email you, but they might send a copy of what happens on Steam Support to your email.

Hey, when a random person randomly adds you as friend and says that they have "accidentally" reported you and they also ask you to contact a staff member on discord, you should know that it all is about a scam going on these days. I know what it is all about because I have experienced something like this like 2 months ago and the supposingly "steam moderator" asked me to give them my cs go items so they could convert them into some other items and check their data base. If they were not enough, the so said "steam moderator" asked me to BUY some items like those (they asked some in value of 50$ but then lowered the price to 20$. Of course i did not fall for any of this). They threatened me with videos of them deleting my steam profile, if i didn't sent the money so I just ignered them. I hope you didn't get scammed by these people. Be safe out there!

P. S. Steam moderators have featured badges on their profiles to show that they are still moderating or they retired. In my case I persisted on the idea that I did not have discord and the man that "reported me" gave me the "moderator"'s profile on Steam.

From what I see, the new full time paid mods do not have those anymore (or at least I saw one today, who did not use it as their featured badge). However, they have the large info box above the usual profile features like avatar and text, that declares, that Steam personal will never contact you through chat. I guess, that works too.
Yeah i think they were pretending to be a staff member. Using one of the real staff member's steam page etc
