So just wondering, if i bought game "x" on steam a while ago, if i buy a key for expansion pass of said game is it ok to activate it on Steam ?

As long as it is a Steam key you are buying it will be 100% ok

so long as the key is from a legit seller, then your fine.

It's 100% ok.

As long as it's a valid Steam key it will activate on Steam.

If it's a key for DLC then all that matters is that you own the base game on the Steam account.

Steam/Valve have no issue with it at all, you are allowed to do it.

Steam keys are give to developers/publishers so they can sell on 3rd party sites. If it is a valid Steam key, then it will work.

If it is a key for another platform, then it will not work on Steam.

There is no rule that you can't buy from a 3rd party seller, but keep in mind that there are unauthorized seller that obtain keys by unknown ways (eg: not through the game's developer/publisher) and there is a chance such key could be revoked (by the developer/publisher) at some point.

Was mostly asking because i wanted to get the HITMAN 2 Expansion Pass, saw a key at around 5-6 euros for it.

I wanted to hold on until the Winter Sale but it's still 10 days away and i'm not even sure how much the expansion pass will even be discounted during the sale.

Well yup, you should be fine, but just to underline you need to be aware of the difference of REPUTABLE 3rd party sites (like Humble Bundle, Fanatical, Amazon, Green Man Gaming et al) versus the scammy grey market key resekllers that we can't even name here. Thos are keys usually bought with stolen credit cards, etc and are a false economy.

As long as you follow that, you're good.

If so, I have bought from them in the past and never had any issues.

And a quick look at isthereanydeal reveals that the pass will probably not be quite as cheap on Steam during the next sale,
